Session Summaries by Pre-Calculus Tutors

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Juliana in Lockport, IL
Today we worked through a practice midterm to prepare the student for her midterm on Wednesday. The topics primarily covered were limits and using derivatives to find extrema in addition to graphing a function after describing it (i.e. domain, zeros, y-intercept, extreme points, VAs, POEs, end behavior, and range). In general she did very well with the practice test. I had to remind her about some derivative rules related to logs and exponentials; she is going to review this well before her test. We also had to work carefully through a question regarding a step-wise function as she had forgotten how to work with those. After working through it, she seemed to have a much better grasp of the concept. I also emphasized continuity with her as we have seen several questions regarding that topic and she is not 100% on it. Once she is reminded of the 3 factors that determine continuity she works through a problem just fine. Overall I think she is well prepared and with some additional studying she will be ready for her midterm. I recommended she study her previous exams to make sure she is ready for all of the topics.

Today, we worked through the student's review guide to prepare for her final exam this week. We primarily focused on the older material she needed help in remembering from earlier in the school year. This included graphs, mins, maximums, factoring, and determining zeros (including using synthetic division and involving functions with complex roots and performing the same tasks with those types of functions). The student felt very comfortable with the graphing and finding roots. She just needed minimal help with remembering finding roots if one was given as well as understanding the roots written in factored form.

The student has a quiz tomorrow on the half and double angle formulas as well as the addition and subtraction formulas for trig functions. We practiced working through the problems on quizzes from previous years as well as the practice quiz. She actually did pretty well with the material but she does struggle with starting the problems. I think she gets a little intimidated when they look especially hard. When I had her do problems on her own from the practice quiz she did very well.

We continued to go through the student's review packet, which is why this session was extra long because it required more attention to several different topics so she can be successful on the exam. She mostly struggled with topics from the beginning of the year that are not as fresh. I included strategies of showing examples in a couple ways, and even gave my own examples. The rest of the student's review packet is for her extra practice.
