Session Summaries by Math Tutors

Math Tutoring review by Terry in Lockport, IL
The student and I worked from her uploaded textbook sections and notes on graphing quadratic functions for a test she will take on Tuesday. She was unsure what her questions were so we talked through the examples in her notes, which seemed to work well for her. We discussed finding zeros by graphing and by finding square root. We will resume review and work problems from her homework on Thursday. She said she was understanding better.

Math Tutoring review by Andrew in Lockport, IL
In this session we went over simplifying and factoring polynomials. The student has a decent grasp on factoring polynomials. The only problems he struggled with were more complex polynomials with leading coefficients and 3rd degree polynomials. We did work on those though with some success. I encouraged him to keep practicing on those as it is the best way to get a hang on them. He needed help a bit with combining/simplifying polynomials. We did work through the problems and the practice did seem to help him remember the material.

Since the student has been making great progress in both Biology and Algebra (he now has a C in Biology and he believes he is up to a D in Algebra) he wanted to work on an English assignment (since it is now his lowest grade), and so I helped guide him to complete it. Once finished with that, we worked through another algebra homework assignment dealing with parabolic functions and identifying the vertex and roots. He now has a fairly good grasp on the concept and should be taking his first re-take exam on Tuesday of next week.

Math Tutoring review by Christopher in Lockport, IL
We studied more proofs, just like last week. We spent the first half of the session having the student study his theorems by making a "cheat sheet" if you will. In the second half, I had him do some more geometric proofs, as per his request. He has improved since last week, since he hardly needed my input for most of all of the proofs, and even my interventions were usually as simple as pointing to the cheat sheet he made and having him search or look at a theorem he might need. He has a quiz on Friday, so I wish him good luck on that!

Today the student and I covered strategies for solving probability and statistical analysis problems. The purpose of practicing these strategies was to help him complete two lengthy homework assignments. Additionally, we reviewed several mathematical concepts that were covered in previous lessons--in order to help him prepare for the upcoming standardized exams.

Math Tutoring review by Johnathan in Lockport, IL
The student and I contacted one another prior to our session. He sent me a copy of his syllabus and a sample test of problems he struggled with in his books. I looked at the syllabus and solved 30 problems of his sample test. . To start we covered his struggles with addition/subtraction/multiplication/division of complex fractions involving variables. We also worked on converting mixed numbers to proper and improper fractions prior to solving equations. We than worked on simplifying fractions. Overall, he has a great attitude conducive towards learning. We made a lot of progress and he seemed to independently solve the problems once he understood the method. I received a copy of his old test and will be looking over his test to search for any weaknesses. I will soon be sending him condensed notes of what we worked on this session and he was told he could send me anything he is having trouble with via email. He seemed to be making a lot of progress quickly and exceeded my expectations. He is well on his way to acing his next test with more practice and repetition. He expressed his eagerness to work with me in the future. Overall the session went flawlessly.
