Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Physics Tutoring review by Christine in Woodridge, IL
We went over new material on the laws of reflection and refraction, and ray tracing/mirror/lens equations for convex and concave mirrors and lenses. We went through examples of drawing the rays for each type of system and using the formulas to determine image distance, height and magnification. A few things had to be clarified, but overall, she seems to have a good understanding of these new concepts. I suggested going through past quizzes/tests/homework and making sure she can set up solutions for each problem. Anything that she has trouble with, we will go over next time to review for her final exam.

Physics Tutoring review by Art in Woodridge, IL
The student and I worked on lenses, including reflection, refraction, images, thin lenses, and ray diagrams. He seemed to have a pretty good understanding of these topics; he just needed a little bit of extra help to get him over the top. We spent a small amount of time going over the equations, mostly Snell's Law, and then went into working some examples. He had no problems understanding the math; nearly all of his were conceptual. We discussed determining real and virtual images, magnification, and how to use ray diagrams to solve problems. Nearly all of the problems required some use of the thin lenses equation, and a conceptual understanding of what the problem was asking. We worked through reflection, refraction, and critical angle questions with ease, and took a little more time figuring out the lenses problems. He also showed me his homework, which he had missed maybe 2 questions on as far as I could tell, and we worked through those problems together. He was very focused and determined throughout the session, and I would anticipate that his upcoming quiz over these topics will go pretty well.

Physics Tutoring review by Adam in Woodridge, IL
We reviewed for the upcoming test. We focused on diffuse vs smooth reflections and concave mirror reflections. The student had a good understanding of most of the material but needed further explanation of how to solve for image magnification and distance.

Physics Tutoring review by Anne Marie in Woodridge, IL
We went over problems from the first week of class, like using dimensional analysis to solve for physical properties of a solid, either using charge to solve for the excess number of electrons or mass to solve for number of protons. We also went over Coulomb's law, how that applies to charged particles, either alone or together with a gravitational force of weight. We reviewed using force diagrams to identify the weight force and a counteracting electrical force.

Physics Tutoring review by Elisa in Woodridge, IL
We were going over a homework problem the student had trouble with. I started by explaining vectors, then I pulled up a similar question so I could show her the concept and she could apply it to the homework problem. Once we finished the example, I walked her through the steps to find the answers to the homework problem. It was 5 parts so that took a while, but she was very receptive and seemed to understand the concepts well. I tried to let her do the problem on her own as much as possible so she would learn it better. I think she will do well on her test tonight!
