Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Jennifer in Woodridge, IL
After a rough start because of technology issues, the student and I ended up being able to cover quite a lot during our session. We started out discussing the story he read between our sessions, "The Fall of the House of Usher", discussing basic plot and talking about some reading strategies for stronger comprehension. This was a more difficult story than the one he'd read in class, so it challenged him to slow down and focus more on meaning, especially in beginning sections of the text. I asked him to revisit the story before our next session, and suggested that having the texts on-hand for our meetings would be helpful as we go forward. Moving from the story and the characters there, we discussed the makeup of a character sketches, and how those can be useful for thinking critically about a story or writing about a story. We also talked about how those can come into play when outlining themes of a given work. Going back to Poe, he created one very strong character sketch from the work he read in class, and we talked about him working further on some character sketches related to "The Fall of the House of Usher" after he revisits the text, and before our next session.

The student worked on editing his paper based on the notes given by his teacher, then rewrote his ending. We worked on a few mechanical issues with his paper.

Phonics Tutoring review by Sarah in Woodridge, IL
Today the student and I reviewed her history homework. She had to read four essays written by three authors which described several philosophies each author believed in. She did an excellent job focusing through the reading. She had to mark at least four ideas in each essay and explain whether she disagreed or agreed. I think having that extra step in place helped her focus more thoughtfully on the readings. She then had to write a paragraph detailing one belief or philosophy she follows. She did a really good job with this paragraph. She immediately started outlining and brainstorming. She has learned the importance of preparing to write before beginning to write. She also fixed a comma issue in a sentence before going on to the next sentence. She's getting very good at critically evaluating and editing her own work. The student has improved immensely over the past few months.

We spent the session getting to know each other and getting a feel for each other. We spent the majority of the time organizing his backpack, getting rid of papers no longer needed, setting aside material not currently needed but needed in the future, and ordering current work. We also looked at the student's assignment book. It seems that he will need the most assistance with organization, prioritization, and essay writing. He is a pleasant young man that I am looking forward getting to know better and helping out!

We spent the whole time reading through the student's Greek literature book. I helped him understand difficult vocabulary words, and he took notes in the book about different words and characters.

Phonics Tutoring review by Lauren in Woodridge, IL
We started by having the student look through comics and explain what he was reading. He made great strides this week in that he was able to explain the reasoning behind his logic (e.g., he could explain why someone was his favorite character). We then moved on to Phonics and the long e sound. He did an awesome job picking up on the double vowel pattern and correcting himself as he read. Afterward, we tried Lego Phonics, focusing on the long u sound. He was able to answer questions about what he was reading and to make predictions, which is huge progress. He is making huge progress in terms of attitude as well. He needs little encouragement to tackle difficult words.
