Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Physics Tutoring review by Aneesh in Mundelein, IL
We went over fluid mechanics as the last chapter that she is learning this quarter. We did the practice homework questions to improve her skills on this chapter. We then started to review her old quizzes from the quarter to help her prepare for her final on Tuesday.

Physics Tutoring review by Emigdio in Mundelein, IL
This session went very smoothly. Last session we had discussed rotational kinematics and it seemed like this was an area we should focus on. We went through a series of rotational problems and addressed concepts of static equilibrium, torque, moment of inertia, and angular acceleration and velocity. We had a very productive discussion about how all of these quantities were analogous to translational quantities like force and mass. We talked briefly on what we were covering for Sunday and plan to meet again at 3 then.

We went over work, energy the work-kinetic energy theorem, and power. We did a roller coaster problem demonstrating conservation of energy, and we also looked at examples from the textbook on the other topics. We talked specifically about finding the components of force in the direction of motion, and we looked at how you can use newton's laws and kinematics to find the answers (to check your work using work/energy, or if you get stuck). He did very well with the new material.

We went over Snell's Law for a lab: n1*sin(theta1)=n2*sin(theta2). Using this equation, we can calculate the angle at which light is refracted when there is a change of medium. We also went the comparison of the force from gravity to the force from electric charge. Both equations are very similar; the force is proportional to a constant times the material property of two objects (mass or charge) and inversely proportional to the distance between the objects squared.

Physics Tutoring review by Elisa in Mundelein, IL
We were reviewing torque and rotational motion. I started by pulling up practice problems on this, and she worked through them. She was able to do the centripetal force problems on her own, but the torque ones she needed a little help with. I explained the problem and gave her the general case so she can apply what we did to future work. We then opened up her homework online and did a rotational motion problem which she was pretty set on. Lastly, we worked on a mobile torque problem with drawing free body diagrams for each level. Overall, it went well and she feels that she has a good understanding of the concepts.

Physics Tutoring review by Zachary in Mundelein, IL
We worked on centripetal acceleration and its applications. No huge struggles, just learning the material for the first time due to a missed lecture. Attitude during the lesson is good, but they will need to ensure they are doing more practice besides the homework since they want to work on the homework during our lessons. Extra practice will be problems from the book.
