Session Summaries by Biology Tutors

Biology Tutoring review by Michael in Mundelein, IL
This was a much stronger session. Again we continued with our color coded flash cards to map relationships. Today we focused on photosynthesis and cellular respiration. We discussed where glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, the light independent and the light dependent reactions occur. We also discussed lipid and phospholipid structure, as well as the fluid mosaic model for plasma membranes. We ended covering vocab about diffusion, osmosis, and active and passive transport.

Biology Tutoring review by Arman in Mundelein, IL
Today we went over mitosis and meiosis. The student seemed to have a genuine interest in learning the material and was asking questions beyond the scope of the class. For example, he was curious as to how twins were born when learning about reproduction. It seem like he had a good grasp of the material. We went over some of the concepts like the stages of mitosis and meiosis but mostly focused on his homework. He is a great student to work with, and I look forward to our next meeting.

Biology Tutoring review by Neil in Mundelein, IL
The student and I had a good session. We briefly reviewed the questions from last time, and he did very well and was able to answer the questions beautifully. We then continued to work through Chapter 2 in his textbook. Specifically, we talked about the how intermolecular forces and molecular geometries affect the boiling point of different organic molecules. We also talked about isomers and stereochemistry. We ended by briefly discussing alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes. I assigned the student problems 38 and 41 as review problems for our next session.

Biology Tutoring review by Jennifer in Mundelein, IL
The student and I reviewed his summer homework assignment. We started with scientific notation, and I also outlined some general rules for more complicated problems than the ones he was given, but that he might expect to see in the future. We next moved on to significant figures, and I explained why certain numbers are designated significant and why the rules for addition and subtraction are useful and consistent with the rules of uncertainty. We also discussed the idea of precision as it relates to significant figures. Next, we moved on to a very brief coverage of unit conversion for complex units (cubes), and graphing relationships. We also did a short exercise on graphing as it pertains to a specific physical system, and reviewed best fit lines and the physical meaning of values like the slope and y-intercept. Finally, we checked his algebraic manipulations and corrected a few minor errors with the use of sig figs.

Biology Tutoring review by Ricky in Mundelein, IL
The student and I reviewed mechanisms of transcriptional control and gene expression today. We worked mostly from her textbook, and used other websites to illustrate more complicated topics. She seemed to follow the material; however, I think she will benefit more if she reviews the text beforehand and asks questions. I suggested she do this for our next session.
