Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Anna in Mundelein, IL
We worked on writing the entire time. I told him to write me a story about what he had done the day before. I told him to write me a full page about what he did. After he wrote me a whole page, we worked together on how to make it better, more understandable, and of course fixed any minor grammar or punctuation mistakes. His attitude is always very optimistic when working together. He has a strong will to learn and to improve his writing/English. I did include many strategies and study skills in this lesson for him. The main concepts I told him to work on are Syntax, Diction, Specificity, and being able to convey his message to readers who are unfamiliar with his research. We made a plan that I would give him "homework" or writing prompts (essentially essays) for him to work on throughout the week when we're not together for him to bring once we do see each other. That way it will save time, and we can mainly focus on the content. He is improving more and more with each session, which I can only assume that this trend will keep increasing in improvement throughout the weeks. He keeps an open-minded attitude and shows a genuine will to learn. He never hesitates to ask a question when confused or when he doesn't understand something.

Phonics Tutoring review by Michael in Mundelein, IL
Worked on a couple of things related to writing. First, we worked on polishing a thesis statement for an essay to be written later in the semester. Her teacher wanted her to use parallel structure in the thesis, which we worked on, as well as finding the right balance between too much and too little information. Second, we worked on how to approach writing a summary of a newspaper article in terms of reading the article to find the important points to use in a summary. She went through and highlighted important points, and then we discussed how to identify the salient aspects of an article (i.e. who, what, when, where, etc.). We also spent some time working on Latin vocabulary and understanding parts of speech and how to identify them both in English and in Latin. She was very persistent and, most of the time, got to the answer on her own. In terms of writing, she seems to have a good grasp of what to do but needs help figuring out how to do it. She also picks up on things very quickly.

Phonics Tutoring review by Samera in Mundelein, IL
Today we specifically covered the student's literature review data matrix, and went through specific content to make sure it was correct. We covered concepts including sample size, outcome variables, and conclusions. We also covered some basic APA formatting rules. The student was responsive and took notes on where corrections needed to be made. He will go through the articles and the data matrix table again to review any content errors. Once that is complete, we will meet again to finalize the data matrix and he will move on with the rest of the assignment.

Phonics Tutoring review by John (Kyle) in Mundelein, IL
We worked on more sight words. There has been a large improvement since our pre-session understanding. Using a firm, but kind approach has enabled a more risk-taking approach by the student and, as a result, a penchant for attempting to sound words out. This has lead to a greater deal of success in not only reading but now writing and spelling as well.

We worked on nonfiction writing. The student was given a task to make a newspaper front page with news, weather, and sports sections and an ad. We discussed how nonfiction text exists to either inform, persuade, or entertain. He did a great job and his newspaper was very well done!

We worked on numbers 1-25 and letters A-L. We focused on the letters I, G, H, and J. The student had an excellent attitude and was much more focused today. The student learned and was able to count up to 25.
