ACT English Tutoring review by Nora in Mundelein, IL
The student and I dove into the English test after reviewing the practice work she did with the Math techniques that we had finished up with in our previous session. She identified her biggest challenge with the English section as punctuation, followed by grammar; she expressed confidence with respect to the Rhetorical Skills questions. With these priorities in mind, we used sample ACT English questions to illustrate and discuss: * the role and proper use of commas, semicolons, and apostrophes; * the basic grammatical requirements for sound sentence structure, as well as the effect of participles and relative pronouns on phrases that might otherwise make sense as main clauses; * the differences between adjectives and adverbs; * some ways to spot verbosity and redundancy in underlined portions of sentences/paragraphs; * the passive vs. the active voice (and how to re-phrase sentences in the former to use the latter); and * some common traps that the ACT English test is likely to present, such as underlined verbs in clauses with the construction "[singular noun] of/on/from [plural noun] [plural verb]," which are designed to test the student's ability to look past the immediate juxtaposition of matching words to analyze sentence structure and spot actual discrepancies in subject-verb or pronoun-antecedent agreement. The student worked very hard and made notable progress in her mastery of grammar and punctuation. Her aptitude for Rhetorical Skills questions is indeed strong: although I checked in with her about questions of this type that we encountered in our practice, she needed little to no guidance to answer them correctly.

ACT English Tutoring review by Angela in Mundelein, IL
We spent about 20 minutes discussing the student's previous testing attempts, study habits, testing strategies she already applies, her struggles, and the gains she has already made in the area of English. Then we reviewed some important testing strategies for the English exam, which can also be applied to other subject areas: Know how the test is broken down and scored, be well-rested and comfortable, practice relaxation techniques (i.e., deep breaths, stretches, calming music), skim passages, skip and return to difficult questions, use the process of elimination, and fill in any empty blanks at the five-minute warning. The student practiced these strategies by taking a 45-question English pre-test. She had 27 minutes to complete the pre-test, thus simulating the 36-second-per-question average of the actual ACT English exam. The student finished early, which allowed her to go back and review many of her answers. Afterward, we tallied her correct and incorrect answers to identify areas in need of review. I will break down the data and email her a report on specific grammar concepts we may need to review and practice in our next session, but we noticed that the answers she missed were clumped by passages, reflecting her struggle with reading certain types of passages.
