Math Tutoring review by Wesley in Diamond Bar, CA
The pupil had a test on Friday, so we did a chapter review. Her test involved conic sections equations and graphing. We reviewed how to graph a parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola. I helped her remember how to find a directrix and focus for a parabola through the equation. For ellipses, she needed help remembering how to find vertices and what constituted the major or minor axes as well as how to find the foci for an ellipse. For the hyperbola, she needed a way to remember which one was added and which one was subtracted, so I provided a strategy (two halves of the ellipse come together = "+"; hyperbola points away = "-"). Lastly, we went over how to take the info above to find the equations of conic sections.

The student and I worked on Pre-Calc material for the first time in a few months. She was struggling with some factoring methods in class so we reviewed those (specifically by elimination and substitution). She seemed to feel much better by the end of the session. We'll be meeting again this Monday.

Math Tutoring review by Georgia in Diamond Bar, CA
Tonight the student and I covered fractions, and how to find missing denominators and numerators in a series of equivalent fractions. The most challenging thing for her was understanding the mechanics of what is actually happening to the numbers to make them into a new, equivalent fraction i.e. multiplying both the numerator and the denominator by 2 to make 1/2 into 2/4. She seemed happy to learn, and did not show any signs of discouragement or stress. I wrote out a step by step list of how to approach problems for when she is working on them at home. I left her with the rest of the work sheet I had made for her to practice at home. I didn't see any test scores yet. I think this was a really productive session. I think the best thing she can do right now is to practice the same types of problems over and over until they become more intuitive through repetition.

Math Tutoring review by Janiece in Diamond Bar, CA
This was my first session with the student, so we spent a little time getting acquainted and getting an idea of what she has covered in her home schooling curriculum. She has almost mastered her multiplication tables, but would still benefit from daily 5-10 minute drills, adding the next number group up each time. While showing her how to find a percentage of a number, I also showed her how to multiply two or three-digit numbers that end in zero by counting the zeros and multiplying the non-zero numbers, speeding up the process by alleviating the calculations of the zeros. Having been informed that she is currently working on fractions, I asked her questions to assess her knowledge and skill level, so I can create a lesson plan for her. She has a good grasp of the values of specific fractions. and was able to determine which was a higher value than the other. The student's mom has done a wonderful job homeschooling. She is a bright girl who enjoys learning and catches on quickly.

Math Tutoring review by Dae in Diamond Bar, CA
For this session, the student and I reviewed graphing of non-linear equations. He has had difficulty with graphing in the class and outlining basic rules for graphing equations and inverse equations really help. I drafted some notes outlining basic patterns of linear and non-linear graphs as well as their inverse, which seemed to help him better understand the concept. Outlining the basic pattern and directions of functions seems to be a really effective study method.
