Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Mark in Schiller Park, IL
In this session the student did an adding and subtracting worksheet as well as an all, some, and none statement worksheet. The adding and subtracting worksheet consisted of adding and subtracting two to four digit numbers along with word problems. This was review on what he has done the previous week. After he was done with that, he did the other worksheet. The worksheet consisted of reading the statements and writing either true, false, or cannot tell. In one of the boxes there were statements such as all, some, and none. For example, all of the 4th graders play the flute, some of the 4th graders play the trumpet, and none of the 5th graders play the violin. In one of the questions he answered true to "Jenny is a 4th grader so she plays the trumpet." The reason why this is correct is because all refers to everyone, some refers to one or a few, and none refers to no one. He did that to every other question. Some were false and cannot tell. He found the work to be easy. He was not struggling with anything nor were there any concerns from this session. I did not leave him with any extra practice because he understood the material.

We went over 3 quizzes that the student had already taken this semester with mixed results. The quizzes were considered review material from previous years. She needed some help with rational equations. I encouraged her to find the LCD for all terms in the rational equation and multiply her equation by that LCD, as this would transform it into a regular equation. She appreciated the advice and started using it immediately. We also went over some homework on factoring/ quadratic formula. She didn't have many issues with this.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Robert in Schiller Park, IL
Today, we focused on completing a homework set of problems that dealt with inequalities. Overall, the student was very successful with this. We both notice that his pacing with solving different types of expressions is improving, and his understanding is improving as well. We also reviewed quadratic equations more toward the end of the session, which I think will be beneficial to review more later.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Augustina in Schiller Park, IL
Today's session went great! The student is improving greatly with combining like terms. On the homework that I gave her previously, she only got 3 questions incorrect. When I told her to review her work and why she got the answer wrong, she was able to correct herself. She had been struggling with distributing negatives outside of parentheses, however I walked her through a verbal process where she explained to me how she would distribute and the correct sign of the distribution. Now that she understands this, I see that she is not making the same mistakes she was making before. She has a quiz coming up this Friday and I think she is ready. I gave her some homework to review with combining like terms ranging from easy to difficult. I am confident in her ability; she just needs to check her work. She knows how to figure it out if she has done a problem incorrectly.
