The student finished writing the definitions of her vocabulary words for lesson 12. She completed the extra practice exercises I created for lessons 10 and 12 in preparation for her unit 3 test that is on Friday. She reports that she feels confident for her test. We completed the day with beginning her lesson 12 spelling, that will not be included in that same test.
The student and I annotated a poem. We then worked on SAT improving paragraphs. We discussed general strategies and then did two sets of problems together. We created a strategy for the student to use to find the main ideas and better understand the passage before he even gets to the questions.
The student and I reviewed some vocabulary and some compound sentences for a take-home quiz. He did well in 80% of these questions and only needed occasional assistance. He was pretty focused today.
The student and I worked to revise her research paper, as well as discuss any questions she had regarding MLA and general paper writing help. We covered properly citing a source, spelling and grammatical errors, structure, and paper outlining. We checked the paper's overall thesis, purpose, and main points, then placed these items on a template outline I brought along. We discussed when to cite a source, and the importance of adding the authority of the author (the student) to the paper.
Before we meet again Sunday morning, the student and I discussed her covering the following: create a new outline following the worksheet (within the rubric for the assigned paper), revise the paper based on the new outline, apply proper MLA formatting, create a conclusion paragraph, and create a works cited page. Overall, I felt it was a great session, and we were able to cover the entire paper during our time together.
The student and I began work on identifying direct objects in sentences. We also covered the role of adjectives, nouns, and verbs and how they operate within the subject-object structure of the sentence. She was able to do well and complete multiple examples correctly. We then discussed possessive adjectives compared with plural nouns. We will follow up on this next week.
During this session we went over writing. Included in that we went over spelling, punctuation and figurative language. Within figurative language we covered personification, similes, metaphors and idioms. We also briefly went over reading comprehension and using context clues.
