I'm a recent grad from Northwestern (B.A. in Theatre and Economics) who loves teaching and learning. I love helping other people achieve their goals and helping students find ways to be their best selves. Excited to meet and work with Chicagoland's students!... First sessions always start with discussion of a subject's foundations. If we nail these, the rest of the learning becomes ten times easier.... I'm big on listening. It's my job to hear what a...

I prefer to test mastery of material via a role reversal in which I see if the student can teach me how to correctly solve problems and arrive at the correct answers. In my opinion, there is no better way to assess the depth and breadth of one's knowledge...

Private In-Home and Online Fiction Writing Tutoring
Receive personally tailored Fiction Writing lessons from exceptional tutors in a one-on-one setting. We help you connect with in-home and online tutoring that offers flexible scheduling and your choice of locations. How can a Fiction Writing tutor help you?
Fiction writing may seem like something someone either can or cannot do. A writer is born, not made, or so the thinking goes. Anyone who has ever taken a course in fiction writing knows that there are many things that can be done to improve one's creative writing, however. Brainstorming can be learned, vocabulary can be improved, and characterizations can be refined. And those are all related to the prose itself, never mind refining a piece's plot or story development. No one wakes up one morning with the ability to write a brilliant novel; one must instead develop his or her skills consistently and with the right tools.
You should not give up on writing fiction just because you are struggling in one creative writing course. Writer's block often happens because fiction writing can be quite difficult, and a fiction writing program is built around finding those tools and strategies that allow you to get past writer's block. If you cannot handle all of those tools and strategies, then you will have difficulty on your journey to becoming a successful writer. Falling behind on those seemingly tedious homework assignments can mean you do not develop all of the skills necessary for a fiction writer.
