Creative Writing Tutoring FAQ
Many writers claim that putting a pen to paper is the easiest way for them to express themselves. Perhaps you are finding yourself in that same boat, wanting to scribble down your many complex thoughts and stories into writing, but you just are not sure how to get started. On the other hand, some students find that beginning a piece is easy, but that continuing the story is the real challenge. Whether you wish to refine your storytelling skills, identify how to best organize a creative piece, or simply gather feedback on how effectively your written ideas come across on paper, Varsity Tutors can help connect you with a one-on-one creative writing tutor who can help. Tutors work with students of all ages, all across the United States. They are brilliant creative writers who love to share their passion with others. Allow one of these talented instructors to work with you personally and help improve your creative writing abilities.
We recognize that students of varying experience levels may need creative writing tutoring, which is why a tutor will tailor the curriculum specifically to your needs. If you are a graduate student seeking a mentor who can assist you in perfecting that short story you are working on, we can help connect you with a tutor who specializes in doing just that. On the other end of the spectrum, you might be a younger student with a budding interest in creative writing who is struggling to get started; if so, we can help connect you with a tutor who focuses on teaching you the introductory aspects of the field. A tutor will be happy to help you learn how to tell a compelling story, or how to make an already strong story even better. From fiction and nonfiction to poetry and personal essays, Varsity Tutors can help you connect with an individualized creative writing tutor available across the nation to help you master your craft.
The Varsity Tutors educational directors can help you connect with a tutor based on individual learning needs. A private tutor is very beneficial because they can give you as much time as you need to master a concept.
Moreover, creative writing tutors have been vetted to ensure that he or she is an excellent teacher and communicator, as well as exceptionally talented when it comes to the skill set of creative writing. We make sure that you are working closely with an instructor who understands the most important elements of this subject, such as engaging a reader, avoiding clichés, incorporating imagery, and so on. Students who use a creative writing tutor can benefit from the advantage of working one-on-one with an expert who can give thorough, constructive feedback on any number of creative writing pieces, as well as bestow some crucial creative writing strategies.
While your creative writing teacher can give you some idea as to areas you can work on, they typically don't have time to help you work through them. A private tutor can help in this capacity because they can work with you through every step of the writing process to make sure that you are reaching your full potential as a writer.
Varsity Tutors' live learning platform allows you to meet your private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This provides you with the flexibility to meet your tutor at a time and place that works best for you.

Recent Creative Writing Tutoring Session Notes
The student finished writing the definitions of her vocabulary words for lesson 12. She completed the extra practice exercises I created for lessons 10 and 12 in preparation for her unit 3 test that is on Friday. She reports that she feels confident for her test. We completed the day with beginning her lesson 12 spelling, that will not be included in that same test.
The student and I annotated a poem. We then worked on SAT improving paragraphs. We discussed general strategies and then did two sets of problems together. We created a strategy for the student to use to find the main ideas and better understand the passage before he even gets to the questions.
The student and I reviewed some vocabulary and some compound sentences for a take-home quiz. He did well in 80% of these questions and only needed occasional assistance. He was pretty focused today.
The student and I worked to revise her research paper, as well as discuss any questions she had regarding MLA and general paper writing help. We covered properly citing a source, spelling and grammatical errors, structure, and paper outlining. We checked the paper's overall thesis, purpose, and main points, then placed these items on a template outline I brought along. We discussed when to cite a source, and the importance of adding the authority of the author (the student) to the paper.
Before we meet again Sunday morning, the student and I discussed her covering the following: create a new outline following the worksheet (within the rubric for the assigned paper), revise the paper based on the new outline, apply proper MLA formatting, create a conclusion paragraph, and create a works cited page. Overall, I felt it was a great session, and we were able to cover the entire paper during our time together.
The student and I began work on identifying direct objects in sentences. We also covered the role of adjectives, nouns, and verbs and how they operate within the subject-object structure of the sentence. She was able to do well and complete multiple examples correctly. We then discussed possessive adjectives compared with plural nouns. We will follow up on this next week.
During this session we went over writing. Included in that we went over spelling, punctuation and figurative language. Within figurative language we covered personification, similes, metaphors and idioms. We also briefly went over reading comprehension and using context clues.
