SSAT Tutoring review by Rebekah in Kansas City, MO
Fractions are very new for the student so we did some more practice with them, working a bit on turning fractions into mixed numbers and mixed numbers into fractions. We also did some work with finding averages. We did a practice analogy test and she got 9/10 right which was awesome.

SSAT Tutoring review by Miranda in Kansas City, MO
The student and I talked a little about what materials her and her mom had picked out to study with - Mom found some practice problem books on her tablet that she preferred to the study guides available, so we're working with those for now. The student and I went through some math problems and some analogies, which are tough for such a young kid to understand (I'm honestly surprised they're still on the SSAT) but she does pretty well, especially when I give her a hint. The math is no problem for her 90% of the time, and she's not afraid to take a guess when she doesn't know, so I think she'll get more comfortable with the test over time.

SSAT Tutoring review by Abbi in Kansas City, MO
This time we focused on strategies and how to answer the questions to improve. We covered synonyms and worked on a practice set. Then we worked on analogies--types of questions and a practice set. We reviewed the correct answers, and I also wrote down her word list (words she didn't know) in her notebook and gave her instructions to write out the definitions to practice and learn vocabulary.

SSAT Tutoring review by Leslie in Kansas City, MO
We reviewed homework that covered order of operations and area of triangles. We then went over writing techniques, and focused on keeping verb tense consistent, ensuring that her story has a beginning middle, and end, and adding vivid description to her writing. We also covered the verbal section, specifically vocabulary and analogies.

SSAT Tutoring review by Martine in Kansas City, MO
I discussed several sections in fraction with the student including changing improper fractions to mixed fractions and vice versa. We also discussed solving for the equations and percent change. I reviewed the definition of vocabulary words with the student including using them in a sentence and later asked him to state the definition again to see which ones he understood. He also read passages and answered the questions.

SSAT Tutoring review by Ben in Kansas City, MO
For our first session, I walked the student through the critical reading portion of a practice SAT from her prep book as a basis for discerning strategies she can use on the test. While her vocabulary could use some improvement, her instincts are quite reliable. She fared well on the passage response segment, and ably worked in my advice about eliminating answers that make blanket statements or use overly judgmental language (or that are simply not addressed in the given excerpt). As a science student she feels more comfortable with the math portions of the test, but I can tell that with some boosted confidence, and added attention to subtle details, she will easily raise her scores on the verbal portions as well. I asked her to do some more test practice, and we will review her answers together at our next session.
