Session Summaries by Chemistry Tutors

Chemistry Tutoring review by Roy in Hartford, CT
We spent the majority of this session working on practice problems that covered thermochemistry. These problems involved calorimetry as well as enthalpy calculations. The student had a much better time setting these problems up after our last session. We focused on the problems that he got wrong to clear up the errors he was making. Most of these were small errors, such as unit incompatibility. The calorimetry problems are becoming much clearer to him in terms of understanding the ideas that lead to setting up the math problems. Once the math is set up, he has no problem solving the equations.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Evan in Hartford, CT
We reviewed dialysis and osmosis using some basic practice problems that I developed using the student's second exam. We also covered several practice problems from the student's textbook which covered acids and bases (general and organic) and buffers. Towards the end of the session, the student also went over some online homework due the next day which was largely a review related to concentration calculations and equilibrium.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Brantley in Hartford, CT
We went over the material that will be on the student's next test, doing Lewis structure-shape-polarity-IMF problems. She is doing very well, and only gets a bit turned around on the toughest problems. I recommended flashcards for the chemistry terms and IMFs to memorize, as well as doing more practice problems to practice getting the structure-shape-polarity-IMF problems correct. Judging from her recent quiz scores and her work on problems in the tutoring session, I believe we have made great progress so far and will work to continue to improve.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Skylar in Hartford, CT
They are currently working on acid-base chemistry and electrolytes. We went through the slides from the lecture to make sure the student understood the base concepts. Next time we will need to go back through how to apply the concepts. We also need to review Lewis dot structures and molecular geometry. We also took a few minutes to review and discuss her English paper.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Melinda in Hartford, CT
Today the student and I worked on calculating limiting reagents, converting from grams to moles, and calculating percent yield. I did a number of example problems with her and she seemed shaky at first but it seemed like she gradually understood more the more problems we worked on. I will send her a couple of websites with example problems so she can continue to review tonight. We will continue our review a week from today.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Samuel in Hartford, CT
We covered precipitation chemistry and the solubility and reactivity of compounds. The student was having the most trouble understanding ion exchange reactions, but towards the end of the lesson she was doing much better. She is a great listener and followed very well. She will continue studying tonight in preparation for her exam tomorrow.
