Calculus Tutoring review by Bernadette in Lincoln Park, IL
Today was my first session with the student. Today we went over some vocabulary words and misspelled words. We also worked on reading some poems. We went over "Do not go gently into that good night" and we also began to explore "O Captain my Captain". For tomorrow's session, we will work on reading comprehension techniques.

Calculus Tutoring review by Jessica in Lincoln Park, IL
The student and I reviewed the calculation of volume and surface area of three-dimensional shapes including cones, pyramids, cylinders, prisms, and spheres. We encountered one tricky problem where the base of a pyramid was rectangular, not square. Together we discovered how to calculate and use two different slant lengths in the pyramid to solve for the surface area. We also reviewed finding the area of some two-dimensional shapes, such as sectors of circles. He had missed learning about sectors in class, so I showed him a way to relate sector area and arc measure without memorizing an equation. We also looked at finding the area of a regular multi-sided polygon (such as a 7-sided polygon) using the perimeter and apothem.

We reviewed the student's homework project. The only section not completed was the introduction, which needed to be typed. I stressed to the student the importance of writing a little more than one sentence, if only because it looks aesthetically better to a teacher and could result in a higher mark. The student seems to be very comfortable with the geometry covered in this project. He understands and can find surface area and volume. I was pretty happy with both his focus and his mastery of the material.

Calculus Tutoring review by Carolyn in Lincoln Park, IL
Covered a range of tricky problems including integration by parts, applications of first fundamental theorem of calc, and u-subs. The student is an excellent, thoughtful, quick student who is clearly getting the foundation of what she's studying, but is getting tangled up in the algebra on occasion. We discussed keeping an open dialogue between sessions to create a running list of particular areas to cover, since she is not necessarily approaching the course linearly at this stage. We will continue to work on the problem points in the next session.

Calculus Tutoring review by Renato in Lincoln Park, IL
The purpose of this session is to review his packet for the final exam on Friday. We started reviewing calculations of volume of prisms, pyramids, cones, cylinders, equation of circles, and equation of parabolas with a center outside the origin. I checked his understanding and he told me he understood everything. Overall the win from this session is that the student had a better understanding and is more confident of how to solve these kinds of problems.
