Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

Calculus Tutoring review by Morenike in Melrose Park, IL
Student has a test tomorrow, so we went over her study guide. I clarified the difference between a partial sum and sum of a series and the corresponding formulas. I taught her how to find the missing terms of a series. We then moved onto binomial expansion. We went over how to determine which row of Pascal's triangle to use. Originally, she was calculating the wrong coefficients but I taught her how to properly input the terms in her calculator so she could get the correct answer.

We covered how to work with fractions and finding equivalent fractions. Once I showed him how to do them, he did them all very well. Overall, this was a good session.

Calculus Tutoring review by Connor in Melrose Park, IL
In this session, we used her workbook/textbook to guide our progression through a series of algebra sub concepts. The student knows intuitively how to do most mathematical operations, but has struggled in the past because there is much that she does not remember from past algebra courses. This includes algebra-specific computations like polynomial addition and distribution. I truly enjoy working with her because she has a genuine desire to improve her algebra skills, and thus remains focused in our meetings. A strategy I introduced in this session involves a relatively simple way to approach word problems. If one writes down and labels all initial variables at first, one can basically let the units guide the process of arriving at an answer (this is particularly useful with applied algebra in math-based science courses). The student has not begun the class yet, so there are currently no grades that show progress (although I believe, from what I can observe, that she retained much of what we discussed two weeks ago). Thanks.

Calculus Tutoring review by Jorge in Melrose Park, IL
Today, the student and I covered binomial expansion. We began the session with a short lesson on Pascal's triangle and the resulting terms of an expansion. Then, we worked on some of his homework problems, including manipulating factorials, with him taking greater control of the problems as we moved forward. We proceeded to work on binomial theorem. The student needed help a little applying the concept, but after a couple of problems, he seemed to do quite well. He expressed confidence in being able to finish the homework.

Calculus Tutoring review by Raymond in Melrose Park, IL
Today we covered chapters 13 and 14 in the student's textbook. These were comparing population parameters and the chi-square procedure. We spent the majority of the session on the chi-square portion doing some general review about the procedure and doing examples related to confidence intervals and significance testing. We also did a quick review on the population parameter comparisons. Everything seems to be going well.
