Elementary Math Tutoring review by Jinny in Lincoln Park, IL
Concepts I covered included addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions with different denominators. We went over a strategy for division involving switching and flipping. The student struggled most with understanding the concept of dividing a whole number by a fraction. I helped her visualize it at the end of our session using strips of paper, and will continue this explanation during our next session. She was left with homework that includes forming sentences with 5th grade vocab, and two chapters of Blubber for reading.

We worked on Language Arts -- continued learning with nouns. I gave the boys a quiz over the material we reviewed. They did a pretty good job. However, I think a day or two (additionally) spent on the material will allow them to master it completely. We can then move on. They had good attitudes during the session. It's clear they want to master the material.

I was so proud of how hard the student worked today. Her big assignment this week was to write a page long fairytale from a prompt her teacher gave her.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Ezra in Lincoln Park, IL
The student and I worked on the WHY behind math problems. I gave him some easier word problems with the stipulation that he should explain why he chose addition, multiplication or division, and why he used the numbers he did. It seems that he doesn't really know why math works the way it does, he just knows that it does, which is why he needs so much repetition to learn something. We will certainly be doing this exercise more, especially as we cover the 3rd grade curriculum again. I left him with what he didn't finish with me, and will send more this evening. I am noticing that he is answering questions consistently with full sentences and units. That is a huge positive!

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Nirmala in Lincoln Park, IL
The student worked on writing and editing his writing piece about himself. He was reminded to use the information from his thinking map so he can focus on expanding his ideas on the details he brainstorm before creating a circle and tree map. He was introduced to conjunctions and writing compound words. He seem to understand the process of writing his thoughts and ideas down, and more practice will support this. He also worked on typing skills- finger placing to speed up typing. He then worked on writing ways to make 10. He was also encouraged to use the Public library site to participate in the Summer Reading Program.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Theresa in Lincoln Park, IL
The student and I reviewed what we had previously read in Storm Warning and made some predictions about what might happen next. We read two and a half chapters, stopping to discuss the action of the story. We then made predictions about what we would read in our next session. He did well and did not hesitate to answer questions or make predictions. I was very happy with his performance today.
