Session Summaries by Biology Tutors

Biology Tutoring review by Izraelle in North Chicago, IL
During this week's session, the student and I continued genetics. We discussed Mendel's Laws, dihybrid Punnett squares, and pedigrees. She was struggling most with dihybrid Punnett squares, but after showing her a method of setting up the cross using the FOIL concept from Algebra, she understood the cross much better. She understood the information well, and seemed to enjoy it. We will be preparing for a test next week, and will start the session with creating a study guide and end with a practice test.

Biology Tutoring review by Claire in North Chicago, IL
We spent half the session going over an old quiz and half the session preparing a list of information she should study to prepare for her test on Tuesday. She didn't do as well as she had liked on the quiz, so I spent some time explaining the correct answers and how she should have approached the problem. To prepare for her test we went through all her notes and pinpointed to most important topics and I answered any questions she had on each. To ensure she understood what I was saying, I asked a lot of follow up questions. I noticed that she was having difficulty understanding what I was asking because she was getting caught up on a vocabulary word she didn't know. I think the best way to improve her reading comprehension and biology-related vocabulary will be to read through a few sections of the text book every week and to write down/ look up any words or phrases she doesn't understand. That way the next time we meet I can explain it to her.

We went through RNA transcription and translation. I explained the steps and the concepts behind that. Then we covered her lab. We reviewed all the questions and I explained how she can find the amino acid sequence by using the codons. She understood that and she was able to do them by herself. Then we went through DNA replication and we covered what happens at each stage and how we get the lagging strand. She is smart and doing great.

Biology Tutoring review by Jason in North Chicago, IL
We went over some pedigree and probability problems that the student missed on recent homework. She understood all of the principles, but she had missed some of the assumptions suggested by the question text. We went over her errors and how to spot some keywords in genetics problems. We did an example linkage question to check her understanding, and she did really well. She did almost the entire problem with very little assistance. She was also able to explain the concepts of crossing over and the logic behind the analysis on her own. I will be following her up by finding a good resource for her to explore tetrad chemical analysis and some notes on wording in probability questions.

Biology Tutoring review by Zachary in North Chicago, IL
We went over some problems that were on the student's final exam practice problems. They included boiling point, ideal gas law, and partial pressures. The most important thing we did was think about how to set up problems or perform abstract thinking that may integrate different concepts or manipulate simple equations.
