ACT Tutoring review by David in Brentwood, CA
The student and I started off with a math section. There were ups and downs. He seemed to have already been a bit flustered when we started and made a few uncharacteristic mental mistakes as a result. He did, however, very astutely evaluate a series problem with time running down. We talked a bit how to better approach the questions at the end, which he is not finishing, as time is expiring. We then moved on to reading problems. In a timed section, he did very well, getting all but two vocab questions, and all but one reading comprehension question correct. We went back over the strategies we had practiced in our previous sessions.

Today the student and I covered some more of the negative, involving one-word responses, full-sentence responses, and the use of negation for "no one" and "nothing" as a subject and an object. We also talked more about vouloir, pouvoir, and devoir as combined with verbs in the infinitive. Her understanding as I perceive it is very good. As I always say, this is an excellent starting point for solidifying the concept if sufficient practice and review follow in the next few weeks to come. As we worked on these concepts, I also sprinkled review from older concepts into the session: superlative, object pronouns (choice and placement), and vocabulary. She did well with re-learning these but also could benefit from continuing to practice them more, which I expect will be more of a concern while preparing for her oral presentation and the upcoming final. All in all, great comprehension and progress as always!

ACT Tutoring review by Jen in Brentwood, CA
The student and I focused on the math and critical reading components of the SAT, as those are the sections she needs a score increase in to qualify for scholarships. She did tremendously well on the vocabulary part, but struggled slightly in the passage-based questions. We also went over math problems, under no time restraint, to make sure she is comfortable with the material. We plan to continue with this pattern.

ACT Tutoring review by Abbi in Brentwood, CA
This was our first session, so I had the student take a diagnostic test with all the different sections, and then we reviewed the answers. She did the best with sentence completion and quantitative reasoning/math sections. She also did well with reading comprehension. She had some difficulty with synonyms, and I suggested some tips to her and her mother. I emailed a list of books recommended by librarians for high school/college prep reading as well as some I recommend for building vocabulary.

ACT Tutoring review by Keith in Brentwood, CA
We were working on the math sections again. I kept track of the sections of the problems she was getting wrong for her to go back and review. She also struggled with getting a few other questions wrong, but it was from misreading them. Slowing down a little and making sure she is answering the question asked is always something to bear in mind.

ACT Tutoring review by Rachel in Brentwood, CA
Today, we covered the reading and mathematics portions of the SSAT. He also learned new strategies for reading. He felt better about math this session than he did the previous session, but recognizes he still has work to do in terms of increasing fluency to complete math problems more efficiently.
