Session Summaries by Graduate Test Prep Tutors

Graduate Test Prep Tutoring review by Jonathan in Brentwood, CA
Today, we focused on the quantitative reasoning section. We went over the practice problems I sent him and he wanted to focus on some conversions. I showed him a good method on how to do all those types of problems. Next, we did some factoring problems and gave him a strategy on how to FOIL without having to do a lot of math. We then focused on the quantitative section and went over any questions he had. Finally, I showed him a technique on how to do hole punching. Overall, the session went well and he understood every strategy being told.

Today I introduced the student to a different strategy for the reading comprehension section of the DAT, which really helped her. We numbered the paragraphs and summarized each one individually, then went over the types of questions that are likely to be asked. It seems that reading comprehension is not a problem at all for her and after introducing this method, I don't imagine that she will have difficulty on this section. I don't think we will need to cover this section much more.

Today we went over the organic and general chemistry problems that the student wanted more clarification on. These included stereochemistry and isomers, claisen condensation and the trends/ rules of alpha-carbon chemistry, and some tricky equilibria type questions. She showed that she has increased her understanding of pH problems and that she is effectively integrating her chemistry subject knowledge. Next week she will work on section and practice tests.

We went over the Dental Admissions Test as a whole and what to expect. We discussed various strategies in general and specifically. We went over the perceptual ability section in detail. The student did well, we just need to practice more. He made great progress as we went on. We have developed a good study plan and will meet again to continue his success.

We looked over several tests that the student recently did. One of the tests was a physical science diagnostic. The other was a full length that he did. The topics included conservation of energy, friction and how it affects calculated velocity, tensile strength, spring energy, deviation of ideal gas laws, etc. We also discussed the importance of reviewing answer choices in CARS and how it is important to practice some where you focus on quality (getting every question right) and focus some on quantity (getting them done at the pace necessary on exam day).

The student and I spent our session reviewing physics concepts. This included sound and the Doppler effect, electrostatics and capacitance, circuits and magnetism, mirrors and lenses, and torque and circular motion. She seemed to have a solid grasp on all of these concepts; however, we did find a few areas that needed brief review from our practice. We will move on to cover organic chemistry material during our next session.
