Microbiology Tutoring review by Aaron in Brentwood, CA
Today we worked on an online assignment that covered an introduction to forces and static equilibrium. Initially the student had trouble working through problems that involved multiple forces in different directions. We practiced drawing force diagrams to identify and visualize all of the forces in the problem. We did a lot of splitting force vectors into x and y components - a common theme for these types of problems. We used a lot of trigonometry, just like we did last week with velocity vectors. He did really well with understanding and applying Newton's Second Law (F=ma).

Microbiology Tutoring review by Kelie in Brentwood, CA
Today we mostly focused on reviewing for the student's science test on Tuesday. We talked about everything on his review sheet, but we spent extra time focusing on independent and dependent variables, heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures, and thermal expansion. The biggest problem he had with the mixtures stemmed from a misunderstanding about what a mixture is. He defined homogenous mixtures as ones that can't be separated, and heterogeneous mixtures as ones that can. By definition, all mixtures must be separable. The difference between the two is in the visible boundaries, which heterogeneous mixtures have, but homogenous ones don't. He had this concept down by the time I left. We also talked about why water is an exception to the rule. We also talked a little bit about math. He was having trouble with least common multiples. He understood the basic concept, he just needed a little bit of clarification on the method that his teacher was using. After a few practice problems, he seemed much more comfortable with the method. Also, he got a 96 on his pre algebra test, which is great!
