The Calabasas School System

Calabasas is a relatively small suburb of Los Angeles, California, with just over 24,000 citizens. The city is an oasis within the Los Angeles greater metropolitan area, which is home to almost 13 million residents. Students in Calabasas attend schools in the Las Virgenes Unified School District, which serves around 11,500 students in the area.

Varsity Tutors can assist your student throughout their academic career, from kindergarten through high school and even continuing into college. A parent always wants what’s best for their child, and sometimes that means providing additional academic help in the form of a Calabasas tutor. We're here to help you identify the right tutor for your needs.

One area students can improve through tutoring is their preparation for tests. To see how well the local schools in and near Calabasas perform on state assessments, see the chart below.

Calabasas Test Scores

Tutors can help students shine on standardized tests, including the SAT, LSAT, ACT, GRE, and other admissions exams. A Calabasas tutor can also help younger students get ready for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, or CAASPP, exams. These include the Smarter Balanced exams, which test students in language arts and math, and the California Science Test. Tutors can help students study subject material, develop test-taking strategies, and alleviate test anxiety.

Of course, Calabasas tutors offer more than test prep. Children learn new concepts based on the foundation of material learned in previous coursework. If a gap in the foundational knowledge is present, it can become difficult for a student to grasp advanced topics. A tutor can pinpoint where a student needs extra attention and fill the gaps, leaving them prepared for future concepts.

Calabasas is a great place to live with its small town feel alongside access to one of the nation’s largest and most thriving cities, and the high schools in the area provide a quality education. You can see how the top schools in the Las Virgenes Unified School District compare to the rest of California in the table below.

This session focused on additional SSAT tutoring for Emma. Her parents want me to focus solely on reading comprehension going forward to pull up her score in that area when she takes the test again in January. We used a variety of reading comprehension exercises, and I gave her a set of passages that were slightly above her grade level to see if she could manage them. Most of the questions she got wrong on the upper level passages were higher order questions, so I think she has a good grasp of being able to sort out main ideas and find details, even when faced with harder material.

We worked on mostly math-quantitative analysis questions. Mostly the student is very good at getting the correct answer. There were a couple of tough questions that he spent too long on. So we talked about strategies to answer the question and move on, ways to find the correct answer by the process of elimination. If he focuses and pays attention to details in the questions and the answers given to him, he will do very well. A few times he has had the correct answer and has second guessed himself; we talked about in that instance, going with his first instinct and just moving on.

We covered the 1st and 2nd fundamental theorems of Calculus, doing integrals and definite integrals. It's early, and the student seemed like he knew what he was doing. His attitude was good, so I just advised him to keep this as simple as possible for his own sake; the material is difficult enough.
