Writing Tutoring review by Laura in Oak Forest, IL
The student and I had another excellent session discussing his initial draft of a common application essay. He had composed a piece prior to our meeting (last night) in which he outlined his method of "optimization thinking." I think he's doing a great job identifying what is unique about him in his conversation (his complete curiosity, his desire to take advantage of every opportunity and his ability to succeed in whatever he undertakes). Our conversation ranged widely, but we ended up highlighting a few of the things that came out of our meeting for draft #2. 1) He needs to add vivid details to his descriptions of scenes, so he gives us an idea not just of what happened but of what the scene felt like and why it mattered to him. 2) He wants to be sure to include a progression -- to focus not just on past accomplishments, but on his hopes for the future. To this end, it makes sense for him to first paint a scene, next describe his way of thinking and how it's guided his behavior in general, and finally his hopes / plans for the future.

Writing Tutoring review by David in Oak Forest, IL
I covered the following concepts during the session. Math: multiplication fluency practice, comparing and ordering fractions, and calculating percents. Reading: reading comprehension and figurative language. Writing: proofread and edit a writing piece. The student still struggled a bit with his multiplication tables, especially the 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s. He also struggled in comparing and ordering fractions. I introduced the strategy of finding the lowest common denominator to help compare fractions, and I also emphasized how knowing multiplication comes in handy. He showed that he is a very confident reader, and was able to answer questions correctly. For writing we went over his writing piece about going to the Hollywood Bowl. His writing lacked some concrete details and had a lot of misspellings. The student's attitude remained positive and he was willing to learn. He will rewrite his final draft as extra practice, and we will keep going over areas he has trouble with.

Writing Tutoring review by Eric in Oak Forest, IL
I helped the student with a paper she was writing; she was concerned it was repetitive and contained too much irrelevant information. I pointed out some areas where she could clarify her sentences to further her central points and showed her ways in which repetition can be effective in emphasizing key points in a paper. There were some minor punctuation issues and wordy sentences, but no major issues. She was excited she passed her speaking test yesterday, and looked forward to me helping her with her lectures for a class she's instructing this semester, so that she can engage her students and make her time with them more effective.

Writing Tutoring review by Nadav in Oak Forest, IL
I helped the student write a summary of a science article due next week. I went over the 5 'w's and 1 'h' (all the question words that form the questions regarding a particular event that a news article should answer). I also went over proper punctuation and other grammatical concepts. He is a very talented young man and is clearly eager to learn.
