Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Statistics Tutoring review by Matthew in Streamwood, IL
The student and I covered Normal Distributions and their properties, Z-scores, measures of central tendency, and variability (variance & standard deviation). The teacher had only covered these topics briefly in her class since her last test, so she will have a head start on the material coming back from winter break. Because she was able to complete comparable exercises during our time together, she should have an advantage moving forward. She seemed better able to understand this material than her previous material. She is adept at using the tables in the back of the book, which demonstrates an understanding of the underlying principles, and is likely the method she will need to master for her assessment test in the spring. However, her teacher requires they use their calculator rather than tables for tests, so we will need to be able to complete the problems with this method as well as with tables.

Statistics Tutoring review by Megan in Streamwood, IL
For our first session, the student and I reviewed concepts like reliability, types of variables, correlation, and standard deviation. We also covered some research methodology like sample size and power, and she introduced me to the topic of her dissertation and some previous research on the measure. She still doesn't feel completely comfortable with the concepts, but she made a lot of progress and has a much stronger understanding of the ideas behind them.

We reviewed the classroom materials for chapter 5. The student will do the homework problems for chapter 5 and will identify any areas where she is struggling. The student will also send me the classroom notes and exercises for the three remaining chapters so that I can review them before we cover them during our sessions.

Statistics Tutoring review by Tiffany in Streamwood, IL
We covered division and multiplication of 2 and 3 digit numbers, order of operations, and fractions. The student did very well, however he works at such a fast pace that he occasionally makes minor mistakes. We will continue to work on his accuracy vs. speed.

Statistics Tutoring review by Lauren in Streamwood, IL
The student and I worked on her math homework from the past week, since she missed a day and another day was cancelled (weather). A few of the concepts seemed foreign to her when we started, but she was able to complete all of the problems successfully by the time we finished.

Statistics Tutoring review by Jeremiah in Streamwood, IL
I oversaw the student's work on his worksheet 5, which I made sure he completed. After this we reviewed counting by 4's. We then moved on to counting by 6's. We also worked on his addition flashcards. He showed vast signs of improvement in his ability to add numbers more quickly and accurately. Toward the end of the session, we started playing a "fractions game."
