Session Summaries by Biology Tutors

Biology Tutoring review by Joseph in Streamwood, IL
In today's session we covered characteristics of prokaryotic vs eukaryotic cells, DNA transcription, and genetics/heredity. For cells, we compared and contrasted prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells using features like existence of a nucleoid/nucleus, organization of DNA, existence of membrane bound organelles, and cell membrane/cell walls. We then talked about cell replication including mitosis and meiosis and their stages. In genetics, we talked about basic DNA mutations like point mutations, aneuploidy, and crossing over. We then talked about heredity, including autosomal, dominant, and x-linked traits and how they are expressed in genetic trees. We used previous homework and quizzes to review these topics and enhanced them with some of my textbooks and internet sources.

We covered mitosis, meiosis and translation in detail because those were the subjects that the student seemed to struggle with most (reflected by progress report). In mitosis, we reviewed the phases, the distinct occurrences and purpose of each phase. For meiosis, we reviewed phases, differences, special situations and overall purpose of each phase that differed from mitosis. In translation, we went through the three steps of the process and the specific terminology for each step. The student had a tough time with the terminology and their definitions at the beginning of the session, but as we reviewed diagrams and context for those vocab words, he became more confident. He had a much better grasp of what amino acids, tRNA, codons, anticodons and proteins were near the end of the session.

We are still looking at genetics, but instead of Mendelian we are now in molecular genetics. We began by discussing the Watson and Crick model of the double helix. We also noted the importance of Rosalind Franklin to the discovery, due to her extensive work with X-Ray Crystallography. We then broke down the three monomers of DNA-phosphate, deoxyribose sugar, and nitrogenous base. We briefly touched on replication and that DNA strands are complementary and antiparallel. We also looked at the definitions for coding and template strands. We then moved onto mutation repair by means of nicked DNA being fixed by endonuclease and ligase. Lastly we discussed chromosome structure and how histones allow for DNA to fit into the compact nucleolus. Lastly we compared prokaryotic to eukaryotic DNA.

Biology Tutoring review by Ayeh in Streamwood, IL
We covered basic chemistry such as ionic and covalent bonding, elements, and compound molecules. We also covered water chemistry. She seemed to understand most of it. The concept of bonding is complex, however, but we covered the basics of bonding according to her homework and her textbook.

We covered both HS geometry and biology. Geometry was very cursory though, as she seemed to have little to no trouble with it at all. We talked about activation energies, enzymes, catabolism vs.. anabolism, free energy diagrams and the 3 big building blocks of life. The material she is being assigned is very thorough for her grade level, but she still seems to be doing well. She performed significantly well on quizzes last week. She did excellently on reviewing the scientific method; very impressive!

We covered High school biology, chemistry and biochemistry. We started dealing with concepts of water and worked through stopping at DNA and RNA. She had a solid understanding of most of the concepts introduced. Had to go over a few more definitions in the biochemistry aspect. We really covered enzymes, catalyst, and pH. She has a positive attitude towards her upcoming test on Thursday. Overall, this session was great and productive.
