For today's session with both students, I conducted an overall preview of their next unit on chemical equilibrium. I began by describing the law of mass action and equilibrium constant (K) expression, the dynamism of chemical equilibria and how it relates to thermodynamic equilibrium. We discussed the difference between K and Q, the reaction quotient, and how to predict the direction a reaction will take place based on a momentary Q value compared to K. I described how to calculate a K value based on pressure for gaseous systems, as well as the relationship of K and Kp. I also focused on giving a clear definition of Le Chatelier's principle and how it applies to predicting the movement of reactions and shifting of equilibrium based on various stresses imposed on a system already at equilibrium. We concluded by answering several conceptual practice problems to solidify some understanding. The students will have an assignment to work on more calculation-based problems at our next session.

The student was working on problems of gas laws and thermodynamics, and I think that he had some good insights into how to set up the problems and some good questions about why we were doing certain things. We covered the ideal gas law, Boyle's law, Graham's law, and Dalton's law. He picked up the computations quite well once the problem was set up, and seemed to have a good handle on the material by the end.

For the whole session, we covered inclined plane problems. We progressed through problems with different levels of difficulty and eventually worked up to the hardest form of inclined plane problems he would see in his high school physics class. He made good progress on the problems during the session, and I think, with some self practice tomorrow, he should be good for his test on Tuesday.

For today's session, he and I discussed molarity. After showing him the formula, he had no problem using it to solve for whatever he needed to find. We also talked more about Mol to Mol ratios and how to even use volume at STP to find the amount of moles an element has. Furthermore, we talked about how to determine an hydrate and come up with the empirical formula for it. He is very smart, and I think he will do well on his test next week.

Good progress in this session. The material is coming really fast. Graphing a describing linear motion in terms of position, time and velocity is challenging. We spent a lot of time describing what happens in a slowing down and speeding up and turning around both in + and - directions, which is so important to realize how these concepts work together. Not easy material, but good progress today. Office hours and practice will help. Again, for the graphs, I suggest to figure out where the object moved to (forward or backwards) and how long it took them to get there (seconds). Then connect the two points with a line that best describes their motion. Straight lines for constant velocities (both - and +) and curved lines for acceleration (curving up for + acceleration, and curving down for - acceleration).
