Today, the student and I worked on a multiplication review, decimals and telling time. She did not have homework due to spring break so we did a review of her 9's multiplication. After that she told me that her class was moving on to fractions and decimals, so we did a basic introduction to decimals and how they relate to fractions. The student asked if we could work on telling time from an analog clock. We went over the clock, the hands and how to tell time. She seemed to understand the concept well. Overall, it was a very productive session and, as always, she had such a positive attitude and a willingness to learn!

In this session, we worked through a set of math problems in preparation for an exam. This included non-base 10 number systems and various word problems. The student and I had worked on problems like this several weeks ago, but she has been challenged by completing such problems accurately and in a timely manner (her exam is timed). I enjoyed the meeting because it was clear that she was enthusiastic and eager to increase her level of understanding. As far as the word problems are concerned, one strategy I suggested involved converting given variables into a unified equation/expression. When one does this, it is much easier to ignore extraneous details often provided in the problem. For extra practice, I suggested attempting some of the provided problems without my assistance. She has done well in her class thus far, so I believe that she has progressed relative to our first meeting.
