SAT Math Tutoring review by Abigail in Worcester, MA
In this session, we worked on the reading section. Our primary focus was still on comprehension of the passages, but, in this section, I started to introduce some "time saving" techniques for the student to practice on a few of the questions. Since reading comprehension is definitely her strongest part of the SAT, I'm going to start transitioning our reading section lessons from "how can you find the right answer" to a little more of "how can you find the right answer in as little time as possible."

SAT Math Tutoring review by Jacob in Worcester, MA
In this session, we worked on the SAT writing and math, going through a real test so that the student could get a better sense of the progression of difficulty. Overall, it seems that the non-calculator math was much more difficult for him, as he often is very thorough when going through algebra problems on paper. This thoroughness may be problematic, as the fast-paced test requires students to get through these questions as quick as possible. While he understood all of the addressed topics and strategies, his rustiness made getting through some problems a bit more difficult than they could be. I suggest that he be more sure of his choices once he sees that he has produced a given answer. For the writing, he did very well again, only missing one question out of the 11 given, suggesting again how far he has progressed in this subject.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Katie in Worcester, MA
In today's introductory session, the student and I discussed the SAT content and format, as well as the overall structure and goals of our future sessions. We began by taking a closer look at the evidence-based reading section and discussed an effective strategy for approaching this section's passages and questions. Lastly, we applied this strategy to a sample social studies passage and addressed the subsequent questions. I've advised him to complete 2-4 passages from a reading section prior to Friday's session. Great work!

In today's lesson, we focused on problems associated with the math section of the SAT that involved the equations of lines integrated with topics in geometry. The topics covered primarily dealt with equations of lines based upon intercepts, range, and triangles. In addition, we covered some reading passages towards the end of the session in order to keep his reading skills sharp.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Hannah in Worcester, MA
In today's session we went through solutions, electrochemistry, organic chemistry, reactions rates, and equilibrium. We are almost done working through all of the possible topics on the SAT Chemistry exam. All that is left are acids and bases which we will do in our next session. We are taking a break, but the student has plenty of review and practice that she will be able to do on her own. It is so important that she puts in a good amount of hours practicing the material we have learned thus far.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Megan in Worcester, MA
We focused on tone and mood today. The student mentioned that he needs to work on knowing the definitions for the different words used in the answer choices. Otherwise, he did well with figuring out the tone of the passage. We'll have to continue working through questions that describe the main character, even if the character is the narrator. Nonfiction history passages seemed a little easier than fiction passages, even if the language was more difficult in the history passage. We'll also continue to work through the inferences that the author gives in the passage. We finished up with some analogies focusing on Greek roots. He will continue to work through these with flashcards, as they would be really easy to solve for if he knows the root.
