Tutoring is about showing people how to learn. Everyone can do it, but some do not know how they work best. I try to pass on the tricks and tips I have learned from over 9 years of tutoring and from doing my own work in earning my master's degree. Teachers and professors cannot cater classes to every individual student and so very often people miss out on information that puts them behind and they struggle to catch up. I try to bridge that gap between what they know and what they should know and try and keep explanations as simple and relatable as possible. I also believe in connecting with tutees as friends so that the tutoring experience is more relaxed than a classroom setting. I get strongly invested in the academic success of my tutees and the confidence they gain from the sessions we have.

I've taught 8th grade science at a high-performing middle school for the past five years. My greatest passion is making science accessible, especially when it can seem confusing and intimidating. I love activating students' natural curiosity and inquiry, and using that to build confidence in and mastery of a wide variety of academic topics.I graduated from Yale University with a double major in Environmental Studies and International Studies, and I love the way science and real-world issues can interact. Part of my interest in the environment comes from my love of being outdoors, and I am an avid rower and bicyclist. I also greatly enjoy growing vegetables and playing basketball.

I am a graduate of the George Washington University, for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I have a Bachelors of Arts in history with a minor in mathematics. My focus was a blend of American and intellectual history. I graduated as a member of the University Honors Program, magna cum laude, and with honors from the history department for my thesis. My Masters of Arts degree is in Museum Studies with a focus on exhibition design and development and American Studies. I spent a year as an Americorps member tutoring and leading an after school program in Washington, DC.I worked with my students to improve their literacy skills, over all academic abilities, and to develop a love of reading. I also taught at the National Building Museum as a museum teacher. Since graduating from my masters program I have worked in various DC museums doing public programming. My tutoring ranges from history, both US and world, English, writing, and grammar to elementary and middle school math and Algebra 1 and 2. I love to learn and want to share that with my students. Beyond helping my students better understand subject matter, I want to help my students appreciate how they learn and the ways for them to negotiate challenges. When I tutor, I try to make things relatable to the person that I am speaking to.Extra curricular activities that I participate in are the Biomedical Engineering Society, Florida Engineering Society, Society for Women in Engineering, Chemistry Society, Society of Physics Students, and Toastmasters. I am also the Secretary of the Archery Club.I know many shortcuts in math because I am currently studying Biomedical Engineering, and am also pursuing a minor in Chemistry. Math comes easily to me, and I want other people to understand it as well. Many people are afraid of math--some get clammy just thinking of it--but I would like to alleviate those worries and make my students confident in the topic.I have tutored English and proofread many essays for the past five years. I believe it's important to inspire students and brainstorm with them as they write. By taking students through the writing process, I believe they can then learn better.
