My name is Elise Newman and I am a recent graduate of MIT. I will be pursuing a PhD in the fall and have some time off this summer. While at MIT, I came to really enjoy teaching.I have degrees in Physics and Linguistics, and am proficient in a variety of subjects including (but not limited to) math, physics, English, and foreign languages. I am fluent in German (both speaking and reading), and I studied Spanish extensively in school.My teaching experience includes tutoring throughout middle and high school, as well as several teaching assistantships at MIT. I am familiar with many different types of learning styles and feel comfortable adapting explanations to new students.

I have taught for over 2 years in public school all while tutoring a variety of subjects. A few of my favorite sports include basketball, cricket and football. I think finding ways to relate your interests to things you are learning is key.

I am a current student at Cornell University with a 4.0 GPA. In High School, I was a National AP Scholar and a National Merit Finalist. I am passionate about helping students succeed, and I am patient and enjoy walking through multiple methods to help a student find what works best for them. I enjoy helping students reach their potential. While I tutor a range of subjects, I am most interested in and best equipped to tutor students in SAT prep (math, English, and test-taking strategies), history, economics, and statistics. In my spare time, I am likely watching baseball, playing basketball, or watching The Office.

I have taught middle school science in Florida for 10 years and provided tutoring in science on and off during that time. I received my Bachelor's Degree from the University of Central Florida in Science Education with a specialization in Biology. I am currently certified to teach general science 5-9 and Biology 6-12. My experience as a teacher along with my passion for helping others all contribute to my success as a tutor. My favorite subject to tutor is life science. I love learning about health, living things, and animal diversity. I've always found teaching life science to be my favorite subject to teach because it is such a hands on subject that most people enjoy learning about. Who doesn't like learning about animals? I also tutor earth and space science and physical science. I enjoy creating a positive learning environment and personalizing each lesson to best meet the needs of the learner. I always try make the subject fun, because it really is! Some of my hobbies include traveling, photography, camping, and my newest interest: baking and decorating cupcakes.

Though I hail from north Texas, I attended Principia College, a small liberal arts institution in Illinois. There, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English, with an emphasis in literary studies. As a student and Postgraduate Teaching Intern, I gained a great deal of tutoring experience in writing and literature. I took a rigorous training course to become a tutor for Principia's writing center my junior year, and thereafter served as a peer Writing Tutor, helping students with papers in a variety of subjects, for a year and a half. After graduating, I continued to tutor students writing literature papers as a teaching assistant for the College's English department for a year. Now that I'm back in Texas, running a small student residence near UT, I'm grateful that I get to continue tutoring! I absolutely love working with students and seeing them grow as writers and thinkers. I work from the basis that all my students are capable of successfully completing any task or assignment given to them, and I serve to share tools and strategies that will help them do so, while also showing them much support and compassion. When I'm not working, I'm most likely cycling, reading and writing at the park, or exploring new foods and places around town.

I am a firm believer in adaptive tutoring. Each student has an optimal learning style, and I am excellent at modifying the way I tutor to cater to the specific needs of each person. I also believe that the best learning is fun learning, and there are plenty of ways to make content exciting and, furthermore, memorable. My favorite subjects are mid-level maths like Algebra 1 & 2, Trigonometry, and Geometry. However, I am very helpful in the other areas listed and more than happy to help in any way I can. I teach students from ages 14-18 and have found techniques utilized in the classroom are extremely effective when tutoring students one on one. Teaching is a critical component of my life and observable progress means the world to me. Ive found that academic progress stems from interpersonal relationships between teacher, student and content. I enjoy teaching every subject but specialize in English and Social Studies. For me, its simply about making the academic content engaging for the students. Ultimately this leads to comprehension and personal intellectual progress. While I have tutored almost every subject, I specialize in STEM and Standardized Testing.In my view, building academic skills and confidence go hand-in-hand, when you feel knowledgeable it's much easier to demonstrate that knowledge.
