I moved to Los Angeles a year ago. Prior to that, I received my bachelor's degree in Mathematics, a 5-year program, from the University of Seville in Spain. I have been teaching Mathematics and Spanish for several years, both in private tutoring and in a high school, in different countries like Spain, France and Luxembourg.Out of tutoring, I like hiking, cooking and reading.

I graduated from Florida State University last May with my Bachelor's degree in Women's Studies, and I returned to Miami to work with the education non-profit City Year Miami. City Year focuses on improving attendance, behavior, and coursework outcomes for students at low-performing schools. As a City Year interventionist, I had the privilege of working with ESOL students at Miami Carol City Senior High. I worked with my core group of students to improve pronunciation, vocabulary, and comprehension, but I also had the opportunity to interact with students from diverse subject areas during after-school tutoring. I helped students craft and edit essays, understand assigned reading, review Spanish language rules and applications, and overall create positive strategies for information retention. I have a huge passion for helping students achieve their personal and academic goals, and I try to be an example of that myself. This year I am preparing to apply to Master's degree programs in social work, and in the meantime I am continuing to provide tutoring services. On a personal note, I am Cuban-American, born and raised in Hialeah. I come from a family of educators, and their mentoring, combined with a scholarship to a college-prep high school, catapulted my success. I then worked in various technical roles at a startup data analytics company for about 6 years. But my interests reach far beyond the STEM field. I also studied fine art for several years, and have skills with painting, sculpture, pottery, and many other crafts. I love to garden, forage wild foods, hike, and connect with nature. I have 2 Permaculture design certificates and worked in farming/gardening for a few years. (If you haven't heard of Permaculture, I highly recommend looking it up. It's awesome!)My next big life goal is to learn more about natural building - that is, building homes from materials that are abundantly available to us from the natural world, like clay, sand, straw, and even living plants! I think this endeavor will be a beautiful synthesis of my skills in engineering, art, and permaculture. Someday I hope to build my own home, and teach/tutor/empower others to do the same.

I have always loved teaching in almost any setting, but when I started to tutor online over eight years ago, I discovered my greatest passion. It's a joy to work with students individually and to use their strengths and interests to customize lessons "on the spot." My approach is often unique because I have a background in both math/science and English language arts. (For example, if a student loves math but struggles with writing, I can help him or her understand writing rules by using analogies from algebra class--or vice versa!) Also, because I am state certified in both elementary and secondary education (and have extensive experience helping college students prepare for Accuplacer exams in both writing and algebra), I am very flexible and can work with learners in many age ranges. I am a recent graduate of Brown University (2012- GPA 3.7) where I graduated with degrees in English Literature and Theatre Arts. I have always had a passion for teaching, first fostering this interest as a teacher's aid in my school's Lower School and as a camp counselor for a number of years. I also worked throughout high school as a teacher's aid at Temple Emmanuel's Sunday School Program in Northern New Jersey. Teaching and education continued to be an important part of my collegiate life as well. I believe strongly in the importance of the tutor-student bond, knowing that best results are only reached when there exists a mutual trust.My most rigorous tutoring experiences were at the college level at Brown University, where I worked as a Brown Writing Fellow. The BWF exist as a select group of students hired to act as writing mentors and editors for the Brown community, and as part of the program, each participant had to first participate in and complete a semester's long course in writing styles and approaches to editing. In 2012, I was awarded an AT&T New Media Fellowship, an award given to those students who show promise in the combination of writing and new media. My grant took me to Avignon, France where I produced a web-documentary (primarily photo, video, and essay coverage) of the Festival D'Avignon, an annual, international theatre festival. Currently, I am work as a freelance copy-editor with Write Bloody, a publishing company based in Austin, TX.I graduated from Saddle River Day School in 2008 as salutatorian and as a member of the Cum Laude National Honors Society. I was also the recipient of the Bradford Cooke Sommer Humanitarian Scholarship (2007) as well as the University of Rochester Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Scholarship (2007). In regards to more specific subjects, I was an AP Scholar with Distinction having taken U.S. History, Calculus AB, Biology, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, and English Literature.I am originally from northern New Jersey. As far as hobbies are concerned, I love Photography and travel writing. My favorite author (not a travel writer) is Virginia Woolf. At Brown, I also sang with a jazz a cappella group, The Higher Keys.

I have been an educator for 12 years and a lover of literature my entire life. As an educator, my favorite thing is to help someone understand how to find joy (or at least comfort) in reading and writing. I believe that these skills open the entire universe to a person, whether it be in a fictional realm or in the boardroom. I received my BS in English Education at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, earned National Board Certification, and have recently completed a MS in Technical Communication through North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. I have spent my career working with students of all levels, including EC, Honors, and AP. I have also spent much time tutoring students to be successful on the verbal portion of the SAT. In my free time, I of course enjoy reading, but a close second would be traveling. I love a good road trip, and I'm also trying to expand my travels - hopefully going overseas soon!

I have a BA and MS from the University of Connecticut where I majored in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and minored in English. I spent several years working in various scientific research laboratories throughout University, and worked hard to ultimately publish my work in the Journal of Mammalogy in 2013. I began my teaching career upon entering Graduate school. I first taught biology laboratories at the University of Connecticut, and then went on to teach 6th and 7th grade Science in Hartford, CT one year later. I have recently moved to Sturbridge, MA, where I was hired as a tutor at The Grow School, and have now moved into a permanent substitute teacher position. I also, temporarily, spent two months teaching full-time in a third grade classroom. I am very knowledgeable and passionate about so many of the science fields, but also about teaching and learning. I have found teaching to be immensely rewarding, and I am confident I could help a person of any age to reach their true academic potential.
