I'm Karen, a sophomore in Vanderbilt's Peabody College of Education. I am double majoring in Secondary Education (middle and high school education) and European History with additional endorsements in US History and Political Science.My academic interests are in Soviet/Russian history, especially in Soviet music culture in the 20th century, as well as U.S. involvement and foreign relations during the Cold War. Early U.S. History also is of particular interest to me, but I suspect that has to do with Hamilton! Non-academically, I row here at Vanderbilt (hence the Nike polo), and am involved in several community service organizations, including Next Steps at Vanderbilt, which is a program that pairs Vanderbilt students with other students with intellectual disabilities.I love working one on one with students; I find that personalized instruction where a tutor can really focus on a single student and adapt to their learning styles is one of the most effective ways of learning for students.

I graduated from UCLA in 2007 with a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology. Since graduation, I have worked in the field of social services assisting families and students to self sufficiency.I have experience working with various populations, including but not limited to at risk youth, disabled adults, students with IEP, and disrupted families. I have tutored grades K-12 in all subject areas as needed such as Math, English, and Writing. Currently, I am a case manager working with at risk youth in high school, encouraging them stay in school and get to graduation. I assist them by creating individualized goals and monitoring those goals throughout the school year.I am passionate about working youth and adolescents because I truly believe when students are provided with guidance and the necessary resources to succeed, we will see them excel beyond all expectations.In my spare time, I enjoy a night in with a movie or a good book, working out, and cooking.

I am an MPH graduate from NYU who is passionate about helping others. I also got my undergraduate degree at Texas A&M in public health. This is where I discovered my love for tutoring when I was a tutor for the athletics department. I tutor many subjects, including math, science, and writing (my personal favorite). I have been on both sides of being a tutor and tutoring, so I feel I can help students achieve their goals and tap into their fullest potential. I cook, read, work out, or explore my city's art scene during my downtime. I can't wait to work with you and cheer you on as you accomplish your goals!

I moved from Taiwan to the states when I was 11 years old. Fluent in both Mandarin and Taiwanese, I started tutoring students while I was a full time student in high school. I have taught American-born Chinese students, Korean nationals, and other US Citizens looking to learn the language! During each tutoring session, individual students focused on different goals when it came to learning Chinese: some students only focused on conversation skills, some focused on preparations for exams given by our local Chinese schools. Transitioning to college, the tutoring continued. Students taking college Chinese classes often email me for quick review sessions to help them ace their college exams.I believe in order to properly learn a new language, practicing the immersion technique will be most beneficial. The more a language is used and practiced the faster we learn. I will also supplement traditional teaching methods with a constantly changing array of context based interactive activities that will help children learn and retain Chinese language, culture, history, and other things (activities such as puppet shows, singing, celebrating traditional holidays & festivals and much more).In my free time I like to hike, beach, shop, practice yoga, explore the city, web page design, cook, hangout with friends and try new restaurants!I am a hard working recent college graduate that is eager to learn, teach with a flexible schedule, and can start as soon as possible!

I am a third-year Psychology major at Reed College in Portland, OR. I work as a researcher in a cognitive neuroscience lab studying human perception, and I am interested in pursuing a graduate degree in neuroscience. I have always been drawn to tutoring and mentorship roles, beginning when I joined my high school's Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program as a peer tutor. Currently, I tutor other students at my college in Writing and Humanities through my college's Academic Support Center.I love helping students feel more comfortable with all aspects of the writing process, including brainstorming ideas, creating strong arguments, and outlining/revising written assignments. I also enjoy working with students on the SAT, especially the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section.In my spare time, I'm hiking, making music, and learning programming languages!

I have obtained Teaching Certifications including most recently the TEFL, TESOL, and Advanced TESOL. I enjoy an active fun class time while still focusing on learning and proper pronunciation. I pride myself on having a patient and caring way. In my classroom, student's have fun while learning English. I'm the Mother of 3 sons. In my free time, I love reading, cooking, card games, and watching my son play High School Hockey and Lacrosse. I am passionate about helping students build confidence and reach their potential in and out of the classroom. My experience includes teaching 6-9th grade math in Oregon middle schools as well as student teaching and aiding in both English and mathematics classrooms. Some of my personal favorite topics to teach are narrative and argumentative writing, algebra I, and pre-algebra.With the impact of COVID-19 on students around the world, it is more important than ever that students enjoy and feel confident about learning. I approach tutoring with three primary goals: increasing student agency, empowering students with a love of learning, and improving academic skills and confidence.I always start by asking what students hope to get out of our sessions and what questions or topics they want to address. I provide examples, challenges, supports, and modeling as needed to adapt to each student. Giving students the power to guide their learning builds independence and empowers students. I hope students leave sessions feeling accomplished and excited about their learning experience.
