Test Prep Tutoring review by Sean in Worcester, MA
The student and I reviewed the Writing and Reading sections of the SAT. From a writing standpoint, she made 3-4 errors on the entire section and she did so without knowing a lot of the underlying grammar. This is very good, and once she learns all of the "rules" and how to apply them, I think she will do extremely well on this section. We also spent an hour reviewing the reading section of the SAT. She did well here also, but we are going to have to put in a little bit more work. This section is a little bit different because there are no clear "rules." We will focus on active reading and anticipating the questions that will be asked. Practice is the best way to improve on this section. I assigned her reading and writing sections for our next meeting.

We worked on writing and reading comprehension. The student struggled a little bit with inferring minor points within a passage. He was very engaged. We talked about ways to write more effective essays. I left him with some reading comprehension to do until next time.

We covered linear functions, coordinate geometry, and probability. We worked on how to solve those more difficult problems, as well as time management strategies about when to 'cut and run.' The student will complete a math section for Monday and continue practicing her vocabulary.

In this session, the student and I further reviewed what we had covered in previous sessions, such as expressions and variables. We worked quite a bit on FOILing and factoring, which he seemed to catch on in time. I assigned him some worksheets on both, particularly in FOILing. We hope to be able to complete more advanced factoring in the next session.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Jacob in Worcester, MA
In this session, we went over the questions the student missed on her practice test. As she did not finish the test, it's not so indicative of what her score would be, but some common themes come through. For the reading, she could benefit from looking for the simplest answers that most directly answer the question and give information that was directly present. She often makes inferences that do not relate to the main theme of the passages, particularly in passages that are more argument-based. For the math, she could still benefit from more deductive reasoning. She still hesitates when questions have a great deal of reading, so it's important for her to use the answers to help point her toward a correct choice instead of trying to go straight from the text.
