Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Physics Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Worcester, MA
We reviewed ray tracing for curved mirrors and previewed how ray tracing for lenses is different. We also previewed the math for finding the image from a curved mirror and its properties, such as its magnification in relation to the actual object. In addition, we also reviewed finding an approximation for a definite integral using the left-hand rule, right-hand rule, and the trapezoid rule. The student is doing well finding the exact area under a curve (the integral) for functions that give straight lines such as the absolute value function, and we talked about ways to determine which y-values are needed for which rule when solving for curved functions.

Physics Tutoring review by Spencer in Worcester, MA
The student and I worked on problems from a review for his test. We primarily discussed rotational kinematics and the energy of those systems. He did well with setting up the systems but sometimes seemed a bit unclear on where the equations came from. Integrals for calculating work specifically.

Physics Tutoring review by Ron in Worcester, MA
We did some introductory electricity questions on a review sheet that they had. It dealt with Ohm's law, power, energy, and real world applications. After that, I worked with the student on some trigonometry review for an upcoming test. They didn't struggle much with the calculations on the physics, once they looked up what equations to use they moved through it rather quickly. I only had to explain the conceptual topics with them including grounding and energy. They were mostly focused on what was going to be on the test and trying to get that information down the best. The student was worried about making some mistakes on the math test because there was so much information. I included a few strategies on how to work through the physics problems, and then I presented him a few alternative ways about solving the math problems. I didn't leave them with extra practice since we spent the whole session practicing the types of questions that they were likely to encounter on the tests. I saw one score for the student on a practice test where he made some mistakes, but he was able to go through all of them on his own and tell me what he did wrong, which will help him immensely when he goes to take the test.

Physics Tutoring review by Hannah in Worcester, MA
In today's session the student worked on his physics homework on kinematics, specifically velocity and acceleration. The bulk of this material is memorizing formulas and being able to plug in the given values correctly. He did need a little help completing these problems towards the beginning, but he really started to get the hang of it as we worked through his homework on his own. I recommend that he work on this material a little bit more and complete more practice prior to his upcoming exam.

Physics Tutoring review by Steven in Worcester, MA
The student and I worked on some one-dimensional kinematics, and then on some problems of chemical formulas. She seems to have a lot on the ball regarding putting these questions together, and I think she was doing fine in all subjects.

Physics Tutoring review by Leonard in Worcester, MA
We covered the student's last exam and some basic examples of kinematics and motion. He was pleasant and engaged. I included diagramming and attention to detail.
