Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Sierra in Rolling Meadows, IL
During this session, the student and I worked on Week 1, 3rd grade sight words. We discussed the pronunciation and meaning of sixteen sight words (high, every, near, add, food, best, next, else, checked, grand, stand, energy, matter, forms, value, notation). He was able to write these words two times each. We continued a Listening Session, wherein I read him a story (More Than Leaves) twice, and he answers multiple choice questions. He also completed various reading comprehension activities. He was able to read through various stories and answering questions surrounding various themes. The student had some difficulty with pacing during this session. He explained that he wants to read faster. I noticed that he sometimes skips over words or passages, and advised him to use a pointer to pace his reading. Next Steps: Each week, the student will be given 16 sight words to help his reading fluency. He should write each sight word three times. He should place the sight words in alphabetical order, then choose four and write one sentence using each of them. He should then ask an adult to read the words to him so he can write them down without looking at the list.

The student completed fluency and comprehension assessments to determine his current level. We will work to improve his vocabulary in future sessions. I left reading passages and comprehension pages for him to review and provided tips to his dad to assist him with his reading abilities. I felt he was very responsive and was a very sweet boy. He worked very diligently during our session. I would love the opportunity to work with him again.

I had a fantastic time with the student today. It was our last session so I pushed him harder than before. First, we worked on a thank you card for his dad and stepmom. After brainstorming, he was very focused. When he's given a task and needs to focus, he learns very quickly and does very well.

Tonight we worked on long i vowel patterns -ie, uy, and -ye. We also worked on color sight words. We worked on distinguishing between b and d as well. We also covered distinguishing between sh, ch, wh, and th digraphs. The student had a good attitude and was more engaged and less distracted.

Reading Tutoring review by David in Rolling Meadows, IL
We began by going over the specific aspects of strong introductions and conclusions, paying extra attention to conclusions by reading two short essays, one personal, another informative. We moved onto SAT practice, focusing on grammar strategies. I gave the student a practice, grammar section and I will use this test to create further practice. We finished by discussing The Great Gatsby.

Reading Tutoring review by Kathryn in Rolling Meadows, IL
We began by the student reading an article comparing and contrasting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. She then answered questions about it and wrote her own compare and contrast paragraph about biking vs. hoverboard. We also read about the parts of a plant and she labeled the descriptions of various parts with the names of the parts. She also answered questions about the plant parts. For math, we began by determining the pattern for arithmetic sequences and writing the next two or three terms of the patterns. Also, she estimated various times to the tenths place and answered questions about how the estimations related to the original times. She also performed addition and subtraction on estimates that she found. To end the math, I had her practice some addition problems and subtraction problems. Before I left, she read a short amount to me from a book on Harriet Tubman.
