We reviewed the student's latest practice essay and Critical Reading/ Writing sessions. 1) Essay had good elements but needs focus, better organization, more detailed examples. We discussed the essay structure and strategy of the outline. Assigned: Develop brainstorm topics -- a go-to list of specific examples from current events, tech, lit, history etc., he can call on and apply to essay prompts. Next session we'll work on applying them in outline form to a series of typical prompts. 2) Reviewed latest practice test errors - one consistent "weak" area was "comparisons" -- we reviewed that skill, did some exercises. Assigned: Page of similar exercises from SAT book. Next session we'll review them plus results of self-administered and practice tests. Following up last week's session, I gave him a list of common idioms for review.

We continued working on the math sections of the test today. First we reviewed a section that he had taken and went over the problems that he had missed. There were a couple problems that he didn't recognize that he needed to use the plugging in method so we went over that a little bit. There was one problem that involved a special right triangle, and he recognized that, which was excellent, but got confused about the last step (that one side of the triangle was the diameter of the circle, and to find the area of the circle he needed to divide that in two and square it). However, the fact that he recognized the special triangle was improvement. Then I spent some time reviewing linear equations and coordinate geometry which needed some review. He really seemed to pick that up which was really good because he's been struggling with those. We'll continue to review those problems next time as well.

The student and I continued our work from last time, talking about essays and critical reading. We tried to focus on really applying what we talked about last time in the essay, which is connecting her examples in a meaningful way. After a couple of attempts, I think the student really started to understand where she could improve, and how she could do it. We also added some focus on general structures for introductions. For critical reading, we again talked about tone, but we added some questions about speaker point of view as well, which the student answered well. Additionally, we looked at some vocab words related to tone and speaker attitudes. Overall, the student seems to understand the topics and find the places she can improve.
