Hello, my name is Evan and I've been working with students for many years. Most recently, I served as a US Peace Corps Volunteer in the Kyrgyz Republic, where I lived and worked in a small village. I taught English to students in 3rd-11th grades and conducted summer camps and teacher trainings, too. I have also served as a Big Brother with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and coached youth sports (tennis, water polo, and swimming) throughout my life. (You know that saying about giving a man fish and teaching a man to fish?) I'm also very open and understanding so I can tend to any specific needs. Pre-school, Kindergarten and homeschooled students are favorite groups of mine as they have some unique learning situations, styles and needs. My Special Education training offers a unique perspective into how to teach so that students learn best. I utilize whichever strategies work with a student and will continually adjust to meet their needs. I believe that learning can and should be fun, engaging and meaningful. I am currently a student at Stanford University studying math and political science. I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and experience with younger students. I have helped students of different ages and from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, and so I am very conscious of the needs and prior knowledge my students and tailor my tutoring method and style individually.I tutor students in a wide range of subjects. In subjects related to reading and writing, I focus first on the students comprehension of the material at hand and then help the student construct an analytical argument. In subjects related to math, I review the foundational concepts in a certain topic before proceeding to assist the student with specific example problems. I always make sure to make my lessons enjoyable and relatable, so that the students attention remain on the subject matter.I am also very knowledgeable about standardized tests, particularly the ACT and many of the SAT subject tests, and so I am always excited to help students reach their full potential on these tests.

I am a retired teacher and have taught 2nd grade and 5th through 7th grades as a classroom teacher. I am currently a math and reading intervention tutor for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders - a highly rewarding way to spend my days! I earned my teaching degree from Wesern Governors University and hold a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies. I have a passion for teaching math. I have found that many students that "hate" math do not really hate it, rather they are not confident in their ability and struggle with it. I want to change their perception by helping to build foundational skills that enable the growth of confidence and ability. I have found that most students know more than they think they do; it's my mission to guide them to believing it for themselves through instruction of processes, practice and celebrating achievements. I specialize in tutoring 3rd through 6th grade math to strengthen understanding of grade level concepts through lessons, practice and working with students at their level to build foundations to climb to the next level. I have developed specialized teaching and coaching methods to help students master multiplication, division and fractions. I am a firm believer that strong mathematical skills strengthen a person to solve all problems with a systematic approach and to perservere the struggle to gain a solution. I value education as a means to open the doors of opportunity.

I enjoy working with different types of students and helping them achieve their goals. I recently received my teaching certificate in Elementary Education at Benedictine University. I did my clinicals with 1st and 3rd graders in Reading and Math, and my student teaching in 2nd grade. I have also volunteered in a first grade classroom helping with Writing. While I have worked with 1st through 3rd graders, I like working with all elementary students. My favorite subject is Math but I also love Reading. Helping students in Math and Reading are my strong areas. I like to have fun with learning and help students relate the subject matter to real life situations for better retention.At home I love spending time with my 3 boys. A few things we like to do are go for bike rides, read books and go to the park. I also love running and reading a good book.

Before Varsity Tutors, I worked with underprivilieged students from kindergarten through 8th grade in all subjects. I often find that students struggle because they lack confidence which leads to test anxiety and frustration. I try to address these issues by teaching in a way that is in line with the student's learning style. Although I maintain high expectations for all students, I like to create a fun and relaxed environment to make it as least stressful as possible.I am currently taking prerequisite classes in preparation for a graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology. I graduated in 2010 from Georgetown University with a degree in linguistics with a concentration in education.

I'm a political science major, also studying human rights, but my interests stem far beyond those disciplines - and I know all of my students are equally complex individuals. We all come to testing and school work from different academic places, but the skills we work on developing are the same: the ability to think, to express, and to comprehend.Reading critically and writing eloquently are difficult arts, and we're all constantly learning and growing in our abilities as we practice. Everyone has a voice that they can channel into writing, and I want to help people find and refine those voices, from college essays to high school writing assignments and beyond. Together we can practice and strengthen the skills that the ACT tests for, so that students' abilities to think and read critically, and discern important truths from text, last long after testing season.
