Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Microbiology Tutoring review by Dhinakaran in Tustin, CA
During our second session this week, we covered taxation and economic efficiency as part of the homework that the student had to submit as well as an upcoming exam this Tuesday. We covered elasticities determine tax inefficiency which included the graphical constructions to determine the dead weight loss. The chapter that the student sent also included the contrasts between the proportional tax and progressive tax and a question on the price of labor with respect to taxes imposed on the employee as opposed to the employer. We made sure to finish the questions from the day before in Chapter 19 before doing the Chapter 20 questions. It was clear at the end of the tutoring session that the student had a good grip on the material and was getting more and more ready for her upcoming exam which she really wants to do well on.

We reviewed for an upcoming chemistry test over reactivity and solubility. We focused on determining whether a single replacement reaction will occur and whether a reaction will produce a precipitate. The student feels confident about the material. We finished the session by working on a review of a math assignment on finding the sum of an arithmetic series. The student still needs to memorize the relevant formulas and learn to move between them to solve for different unknowns, but he is becoming more proficient.

The girls wanted to get a run down of all the basic principles of physics for their AP test soon. We covered a lot in 3 hours and I commend their hard work. We covered waves, kinematics, gravity and centripetal motion, energy, springs, and a little bit of electricity.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Joshua in Tustin, CA
Today the student and I discussed how Newton's laws, momentum, and energy relate to previous concepts she learned in physics. The student really grasps the underlying concepts of physics but can get stuck on notation and some of the math. The big win for today was that the student understood she was taking the right steps to solve the problems, but that in the process, she got confused by small steps such as the algebra or mislabeling terms. We will continue to work on this next session. I'm really impressed to see that the student isn't missing any key knowledge in the course and I think our session went really well.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Jeremy in Tustin, CA
We worked through several problems involving momentum conservation and collisions (inelastic collisions) and conservation of mechanical energy, with a little kinematics thrown in. For momentum conservation, I explained how the velocity before and after an impact between two masses in a collision can be related to each other, namely by using the fact that both objects go off with the same velocity as a single combined mass. I also worked through the roller coaster problem. Mechanical energy conservation is used in problems such as these to determine the velocity at any known height, provided that we know the initial conditions.

In this session, we reviewed the ecology unit. The student is starting to use some of the test-taking strategies more, and is engaging seriously with some of the ecology materials, especially regarding sustainable practices.
