Biology Tutoring review by Joshua in Tustin, CA
We worked on his homework assignment on stoichiometry. The word problems required Nathan to write equations, balance them, and use a given mass to calculate the mass of an unknown. We worked on recognizing the patterns and similarities between the types of problems and creating a system for answering them. This system involved knowing the stated givens and the unstated givens (such as molar masses and Avogadro's number) and understanding how to get from grams to molecules to atoms/molecules and back. His teacher had written a visual of this process on the back of an assignment, and we clarified this visual and added notes so that the student understood it. He was able to accurately answer all of the problems. However, he acknowledged that he sometimes struggled with identifying the compound formulas from the word problems and with balancing the equations. We looked up and practiced a system for balancing equations (metals first, nonmetals next, oxygen, hydrogen, check) and also discussed how acids are named. More practice with these types of problems will also help Nathan increase his speed. One strategy that I emphasized was to cross out his units to make sure that they matched up. He did not make a mistake with this on the assignment. Since we had some extra time, I began explaining the concept of limiting reagents, which is the logical next step for stoichiometric problems. We used a sample problem from his textbook as an example. The student seemed to understand the concept but will need practice. In preparation for next time, I asked that he date his worksheets and assignments and organize them in his binder with the most recent assignments at the front. I also said that his job in class was to check all of his work and to record correct answers for any that he missed.

We covered a take-home assignment in the student's Scientific Writing course, similar to a final examination review/study guide for a grade. The topics included scientific writing techniques, statistical analysis and scientific writing criticism. This was a good session, with the plan to meet the following day, Monday, to make sure the assignment is complete for submission by the due date of Tuesday.

Biology Tutoring review by Miranda in Tustin, CA
The student and I discussed ideas for her experiment on multitasking. She decided to test listening to a story while taking a math test. She will discuss it with her partner and we can look at it more on Tuesday. She got a biology test back which we went over. We also did a quick review of the concepts for her next biology test.

Biology Tutoring review by Lindsey in Tustin, CA
Tonight we reviewed animal material we have covered previously, including characteristics of animals, characteristics of chordates, external vs. internal digestion, closed vs. open circulatory systems, and the animal phylums. The student will need to spend more time with the major phylums and examples from each. She maintained a positive attitude as always and is always willing to give her best effort to learn.
