I want to help. Especially those who appreciate help. Teaching at a residential treatment facility is an excellent example of how I worked towards meeting this goal.
My teaching philosophy is basically the Socratic method. Among its many benefits, this method makes it easy to engage with students. I also like to stress understanding. I remember the 1973 movie, "The Paper Chase", and the memorable performance by John Houseman, as Professor Kingsfield. I always thought that portrayal, in terms of teaching style, was something I admired, and I used that memory as a guide, as I strived to develop my style. However, where he was strict, I am not. I believe in relaxing some restrictions to meet the needs of my students, so long as I maintain fairness. And, where he was stern and stoic, I am flexible and I teach with levity.
