Session Summaries by Geometry Tutors

Geometry Tutoring review by Trieu in Cranston, RI
The student and I started today's session by discussing definitions and formulas for finding areas and circumferences of circles. We looked at arc length and how they are related with the degree within a circle. Additionally, we discussed about polygons and how Pythagorean Theorem and trigonometric ratios can be used to find the number of sides, perimeter, and area in an unknown polygon and its internal degrees. We practiced together problems from the worksheets that the student provided (11.4, 11.5, and 11.6). The student seemed to have grasp this material well. However, he had most trouble with finding areas of sectors of a circle, especially if they combined with other shapes such as rectangles, rhombuses, or triangles. These are more challenging problems because he has to apply what he has learned in the past and combine them with the current information about circles. The best recommendation for this is to be patient with the problem! Deduce the problem into smaller, recognizable shapes and utilize the skills we have been learning to answer the problem.

Geometry Tutoring review by Anna in Cranston, RI
The student worked on a review packet over the chapter on quadrilaterals. She reviewed and used in proofs as well as other types of problems the properties of parallelograms, rectangles, squares, rhombuses, trapezoids and isosceles trapezoids, and kites.

Geometry Tutoring review by Christine in Cranston, RI
We completed the intermediate geometry problem set #4 as a review. We then discussed the practice proofs for parallelograms, parallels, and perpendiculars. More generally, the student does pretty well with the review problems, if she has her notes so she can look up the formulas. We're trying to go through how the formulas were made, so that she could figure some of the problems out without the notes. The practice proofs help with this too. She seems to be catching on with the online practice, since she is given the statements and reasons and has to put them in order. She's learning the logic of how the proof is arranged. Our next step will be proofs with no assistance (no statements or reasons given). We'll start slow, as she'll have the statements but no reasons and we'll go from there.

Geometry Tutoring review by James in Cranston, RI
We reviewed the concepts of special right triangles for example 45-45-90 and 30-60-90. We then discussed trig functions. We started with tangent and did numerous sample problems. We then did sample problems with sine and cosine. The student seems to understand and I gave him a mnemonic device to help remember the trig functions.
