How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

The ACT is a college entrance exam that allows colleges to evaluate your proficiency in English, math, reading, science, and, if you take the optional writing section, your composition abilities. This multi-hour test can seem intimidating, and you probably feel a lot of pressure to excel, since your ACT score has a direct impact on potentially getting into the school of your dreams. The good news is that you can get help in your preparation. Varsity Tutors will assist you in connecting with a professional tutor in Cranston, RI, who could help you prepare for the ACT.

Except for the writing section, the ACT is made up of a series of multiple choice tests. You can expect 45 minutes of questions on English, an hour on math, and 35 minutes each on reading and science. If you elect to perform the writing portion, you'll have 40 minutes to create one essay on a provided topic. You need to be prepared to answer questions on everything from punctuation to reading comprehension to trigonometry. Varsity Tutors can find you an expert ACT tutor in Cranston who could teach you all the skills and strategies you need to potentially improve on the ACT.

Session Summaries by ACT Tutors

ACT Tutoring review by Benjamin in Cranston, RI
Today the student and I prioritized working on reading and science. For some reason, his scores took a bit off a dip from where they were in the last session. I think this is attributable to his busy schedule as he did just fine in the work we completed in the session. I assigned some work for next week.

ACT Tutoring review by Matthew in Cranston, RI
During this session, we reviewed a practice test that the student had taken, going over specific answers he had gotten wrong. We spent the majority of our time on the math section (I feel this is one of the areas in which he could use the most help). We discussed problems that he got wrong, as well as reviewed various formulas and problem-types that he might see on an actual ACT. We focused particularly on basic algebra and geometry during this session. We also spent some time on the English and science sections. I left him with the assignment to practice the math section. I have repeatedly emphasized the importance of practice in this process.

ACT Tutoring review by Kyle in Cranston, RI
The student and I started the session working on the math subtest, reviewing a number of concepts that she had forgotten but still understood. It proved beneficial to jogging her memory, and we still had time to complete some review on the English subtest, with which she did well.

ACT Tutoring review by Alexander in Cranston, RI
The student and I continued working on effective English reading and comprehension tools in this session. We went step-by-step through another New York Times Op-Ed piece, this time on the tricky subject of the US Supreme Court. These kinds of articles feature pretty high-level vocabulary and deal directly with an issue - much in the way that the ACT Reading section functions. We then switched over to work on some grammar lessons. He seems to do well with multiple choice questions and sentences that need correcting, which bodes well for the ACT. However, he does struggle with making his own complex sentences and with summarizing passages in his own words. I suggest that we continue building on these two skills - especially if he plans on taking the ACT with writing.
