Session Summaries by MCAT Tutors

MCAT Tutoring review by Paris in Cranston, RI
We completed various passages in both the physical science and biological science sections, that included topics such as hematology, optics, acids and buffers, buffers, and sugar metabolism. Overall, he performed well on most of the questions that we covered, but he had a difficult time with some of the acid and bases questions as well as the optics passage. I instructed him to please review these topics prior to his test tomorrow. He has made great improvements since we first met and I am confident in his ability to score in his desired range. It has truly been a great pleasure working with him and I wish him all the best in his future success!

In this session the student and I went over the results of a full practice GRE she completed last week. We determined some take away messages from each of the sections such as her need to work on vocabulary more, how she can spend her spare time in the verbal section and which math problems she should skip. We also went into her math sections and discussed the questions that she got incorrect. Many of her errors were simple mistakes or times when she forgot a step. I think that she will see a further improvement of her score as she practices with more sections. We also worked on her essays and some improvements she can make including developing a few points in more detail, and cleaning up her structure.

Today, the student and I continued our review of the verbal section of the GRE. He worked through practice problems for both sentence equivalence as well as text equivalence questions, and walked me through his reasoning process for each question. We then transitioned into discussing the reading comprehension questions that will appear, and started to discuss some tactics that should be used on these types of questions. We also discussed the different types of prompts that will accompany reading comprehension passages, as well as how the questions are organized in relation to the passage.

The student and I finished biochemistry by going over topics including fatty acid breakdown, metabolism, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain. We then did review passages that covered early biochemistry and general chemistry. She averaged one wrong per passage which is very good considering how far she is out from her exam.

We worked on practice problems from the database. We worked on practice tests and flashcards. I showed the student where the questions were and had her share the screen so I could see what she picked for answers. I made sure that she answered every question and then if she didn't get the answer right I tried to have her see if she could get it right by herself first before looking at the explanation of the problem. We worked on capacitors, sn1 vs sn2 vs E2 reactions, separation techniques, and dielectrics. We also discussed general strategy for verbal.

The student and I had our final session today. We reviewed a few problem solving and data sufficiency questions from her homework and talked a bit about her goals and application process. We then did several problems from quant 12 together. She continues to perform well, and I hope she can put together a good run on this exam tomorrow!
