Session Summaries by Anatomy Tutors

Anatomy Tutoring review by David in Cranston, RI
The student and I discussed his chemistry homework for this session. The worksheet had to do with the similarities and differences between the atomic theories of Dalton, Thomson, and Rutherford. As we went on, he got more independent and was creating responses himself. By the end, he was able to differentiate between the lasting influences of each theory and the progression through them.

The student and I worked on the topic of radioactive decay, specifically half-lives. We started off the session discussing the meaning of a half-life and what all the symbols in the half-life decay equation represented. This knowledge was then applied to several practice problems. He did the first problem with numerical calculations, then I showed him how to approach these problems using symbolic manipulation. He picked this up very quickly and was able to immediately apply it to several more practice problems. This seemed to significantly improve his understanding of these problem-types as a whole.

Today, the student and I studied for his test on the periodic table (ch 12). We began with some review homework. Then, using a flashcard set I made online, we went over each concept in detail. He really seems to understand and be able to explain to me the concepts in this chapter well, and I think he is going to do amazingly well on his exam tomorrow!

Anatomy Tutoring review by Julian in Cranston, RI
Today, the student and I did a set of AP problems in preparation for his quarter exam tomorrow containing two problems from a list of AP problems. We went through a series of problems, mostly involving Gauss' law in different geometries containing both conductors and insulators. He hadn't worked with insulators before, so we went over how to calculate enclosed charge using charge density and volume. Most of his questions were conceptual, understanding why things are the way they are so he can reason through the problems.

We developed a road map to complete two assignments dealing with nutrients and their interaction with the body at the DNA, protein, and person levels. Also, we discussed test-taking strategies that the student can use to improve her grades.

Anatomy Tutoring review by Tirsit in Cranston, RI
This was a great session. We reviewed the major bonds and macromolecules from last week, and the student covered the material in 30 minutes. This is a great improvement, considering that we spent an hour and a half last week. Tonight we started going over all the steps of photosynthesis: the overall reaction, light reactions, and the Calvin cycle. She is also keeping up with the readings, which is great!
