Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Tom in Cranston, RI
Went over ten new 6th grade level vocabulary words which the student used in a sentence and wrote the definition. We then did a few reading comprehension exercises. We watched a clip on sharks and I had her react to what she saw/ give her opinion on the topic. She then showed me what she did on her writing assignment over the weekend. We finished the session with 20 minutes of reading out loud from The Hunger Games.

Phonics Tutoring review by Denise in Cranston, RI
The student was prepared to discuss the first several chapters of his second summer reading novel. He was very excited to see me and really enjoyed the conversation we had about the main character. He and I discussed progression of the Donovan and where the author may take us in next few chapters. The student even made some predictions and was excited about his progress. He even completed one of three questions he must complete before school starts. He read aloud so that I could monitor his fluency and understanding. His daily goal is 15-20 minutes of daily reading. I am happy to report that he read beyond his goal for the week. I look forward to seeing him again next week. He is extremely polite and respectful. As always he is a pleasure to work with.

Phonics Tutoring review by Peter in Cranston, RI
We began the session discussing a requirement for an AP World History essay that the student will be required to do tomorrow, in which he has to choose a contemporary work of art and write about the way it relates to some aspect of his identity. We discussed how he might approach this task and looked at a Mark Rothko painting (Blue and Rust). We spent the rest of the session going sentence by sentence through several more pages of Bill Bryson's 'Where Words Come From.' I am pleased to say that the student is understanding more and more of what he reads and is able to tell the difference between words he can decipher through comparison with other words and others he has to decipher through cultural or colloquial context. Tomorrow we shall continue with Bryson.

The student and I reviewed his 15 minute paragraphs and then I had him write an additional one during the session. I wrote a sample for the same prompt and we did a compare and contrast during the proofreading portion. We finished by discussing Anne Frank.

Phonics Tutoring review by Tiffany in Cranston, RI
Today the student and I read the reading passage "Inventors." We worked on context clues and inferring. We also went back to the story and highlighted where the answers were when answering the comprehension questions. At the end of our session we did a quick math game for additional practice. I left her some extra comprehension questions from the reading for practice.

Phonics Tutoring review by Neal in Cranston, RI
At our first session the student and I discussed the event she has chosen to write about for her college application essay: her graduation last year from a 10-year long school in which she learned Bharatanatyam, a form of Indian classical dance. It was obvious from listening to her that she feels a strong sense of pride and accomplishment in having successfully completed such a long and demanding program. That bodes well for her essay, because the more she's engaged in the subject matter the better her writing should be. Over the next six days she's going to write a first draft of her essay, which we'll go over together at our next session. I feel very good about today's interaction and look forward to getting down to the business of writing next week.
