Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Physics Tutoring review by Christopher in South Jordan, UT
Today, we focused on concepts, including capacitance, electrical charge, electrical potential energy, potential, and potential difference. We discussed the major equations needed and the relationships between those equations and ones previously learned for electrical force, electric field, and current. We also discussed the process for determining the equivalent capacitance of a parallel and series system of capacitors and how the charge stored in each capacitor in a series is equal. Lastly, we discussed some resistivity problems where temperature or length was affected.

Physics Tutoring review by Mithila in South Jordan, UT
We continued to work on reviewing the student's practice exam. The last problem was a little involved computationally. The upshot is we did the problem two different ways. I think she is prepared for the exam. My advice to her is to try and manage the time well, since these exams appear to be computationally time consuming. Good luck!

Physics Tutoring review by Dylan in South Jordan, UT
We covered centripetal acceleration, projectile motion, frictional forces, and vector problems. We worked from the student's old quizzes and tests, preparing for her midterm. She asked good questions and demonstrated mastery throughout the lesson.

Physics Tutoring review by Joshua in South Jordan, UT
We covered conservation of momentum for this session and focused on how to break up motion into x and y values for objects in collision scenarios. The student has a great understanding of the concepts and is also proficient in setting up the equations related to the problems she solves. She is working on improving her speed and accuracy so that she can demonstrate her knowledge of the subject. We will continue to work on improving her visualization of formulas and how things like velocity and mass are related to upper values like momentum.

Physics Tutoring review by Andy in South Jordan, UT
We covered theory and concepts of momentum; force; impulse; momentum-impulse theorem; how objects interact and collide; how quantities are transferred from one object to another; differences between scalar and vector quantities; and differences between speed/velocity, distance/displacement, acceleration/velocity, and impulse/force. The student's attitude was persistent. I advised her to imagine the problems and think step-by-step of what happens at each moment in time. Answers can come intuitively, but to explain the how and why, she should think in steps. She has a better understanding of the mechanics overall.

Physics Tutoring review by Nathaniel in South Jordan, UT
We did some quick review of free body problems, then moved on to chemistry with a focus on Lewis structures and geometries. The student seemed to have missed some core concepts here, such as the octet rule. It looks like we need some more time on these subjects, so we scheduled an extra session.
