Session Summaries by Organic Chemistry Tutors

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Sophie in South Jordan, UT
In today's session, we covered superposition theory. We applied it to two problems: one without dependent sources and the other with the dependent sources. After that, we discussed a third problem that integrated superposition, the Norton equivalent, and the power calculation.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Kimberly in South Jordan, UT
In today's session, we went over environmental factors that play a role in the study of ecology. We reviewed Coriolis, wind circulation, and ocean circulation patterns. For ocean surface currents, they are driven by Coriolis while deep ocean currents are driven by density differences, salinity, and temperature. Overall, the student seems to be understanding these concepts. By the end of the session, she was able to recreate the global circulation diagram. Additionally, we went over the different biomes and how the are defined based on precipitation, temperature, and vegetation. We also discussed the difference between adiabatically cooling (how to move the air parcel to decrease temperature) moving up in the atmosphere, adiabatically warming by moving down, sinking air, compression, and heating of the air parcel. We covered a lot of material, and the student seems to be understanding it.

Today, the student and I went over her most recent test as well as some problems that she was having trouble with. She has shown great improvement since we have started. She did a lot better on her most recent exam than she has in the past and is doing well getting prepared for her final on Friday. We will meet again on Thursday before the final.

Today, we covered SN1/E1 and SN2/E2 reaction mechanisms and ways to differentiate between the two. The student was attentive and receptive throughout the session and asked questions. At the end of the session, I gave the student extra practice problems that we will go over in our next session. Overall, the tutoring went well!

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Kevyn in South Jordan, UT
Today, we went over more questions in a practice exam that the student had. The problems we went over involved drawing isomers of tertiary amines, and the rest were reaction/synthesis problems. The various reactions we talked about were substitution, elimination, epoxidation, Grignard, ozonolysis, hydrogenation, halogenation, and acid/base reactions. I informed her that it will be really important to review all of them and even make charts to perhaps be better at recalling what reactions she knows that convert one functional group into another.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Deanna in South Jordan, UT
Today, we went over reactions with radical intermediates and Sn1 and Sn2 reactions. The student is much better at drawing resonance structures now; we worked through a few with radicals today. She seems to be very on top of the material now; we haven't needed to start at the basics or go over too much material in a while. We spent most of our time today working through multistep synthesis problems, and she did a great job.
