Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Nicole in South Jordan, UT
For this session, the student practiced dividing larger numbers into groups of four. He needed help with this concept as he had difficulty understanding how many pieces to put into each group to make them 4 equal groups. He did well with a little push from me in the right direction. We also practiced adding and subtracting tens using the base ten blocks, practiced addition facts and ordering numbers with the Math Slam game, and practiced the first two stanzas of his March poem.

During this session, the student and I worked on Roman numerals. We then checked over his report on taxis and fixed grammatical errors. He needs to continue working on solving problems slowly and rechecking his work so that small errors do not affect his grade.

Tonight we went over adding and subtracting mixed fractions and I taught the student two new methods to do the problems that are more visually based. She has a tendency to get sidetracked so I am trying to allow her to doodle after each problem for a minute or so, as long as she focuses on each problem and gets it correct.

The student got his mid-chapter quiz back and got an 82. He is starting to see where he is making mistakes, which is great. We will work on quiz corrections next session. Tonight, we practiced for his decimal division test. For open-ended problems, we worked through how to explain a problem using the work that was done.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Jacqueline in South Jordan, UT
The student had science homework, which he had completed on his own. He had to do a research on wind turbines by answering given questions. I checked his answers from his search and the important information he wrote explaining what materials or blades is best to make a wind turbine and explaining the wind power and wind energy. His paper was well written. Next he had to review for a math test. So I administered a test prep and mixed review lesson from his textbook. This involved multiple choice word problem questions on the concept of adding and subtracting; measurement conversion, greatest common factor, and writing the difference of mixed numbers in simplest form. He needed help with the concept of measurement conversion and the difference of mixed numbers. I reviewed these concepts with him and guided him in completing the problems. He showed great response and was able to complete examples on his own.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Sandy in South Jordan, UT
We reviewed distributive property, combining like terms, and solving systems of equations in algebra. The student's memory had gotten a little rusty, but she caught on to my reminders. I think it's simply a matter of doing more practice. I wrote her about 20 problems she should work on in preparation for our next session.
