Session Summaries by Algebra Tutors

Algebra Tutoring review by James in South Jordan, UT
This was the student's 6th algebra tutoring session. It was very successful. We prepared for his next assessment covering most sections from chapters 9 and 10 in his algebra textbook. Topics included writing, solving, and graphing linear equations and inequalities in one and two variables, wind and current word problems, writing and solving linear systems of equations in two and three variables using graphing, substitution, and elimination, locating intersection points in graphs of systems of linear equations and inequalities, finding areas of shaded regions bounded by linear functions, and maximizing profit using linear programming. I chose only the most challenging of exercises for him to complete, and he was very successful with these tasks, being careful to show all steps, and defining his variables when creating equations or inequalities to solve a problem. He also is excellent with the presentation of his solutions, analyzing his answers and making them clear, logical, and sensible. Excellent work!

Algebra Tutoring review by Kasra in South Jordan, UT
We looked ahead to Chapter 6, which covers solving quadratic equations. He managed the new material very well, and I taught him nearly the whole chapter ahead of when his teacher is due to cover it. Some of the techniques he learned included completing the square and using the quadratic formula to solve quadratic equations. By the end of the session, he was using all he had learned to solve word problems with great success. For extra practice, I told him to try some more word problems at home to solidify all that he had learned. He had recently taken his Chapter 5 exam and told me he thought it went well. Since we used a similar approach to Chapter 5 as we are currently doing with Chapter 6, I expect he will also do very well on the next upcoming exam.

Algebra Tutoring review by Miranda in South Jordan, UT
First we looked over the student's quiz on rational expressions. She missed three problems. The first was because she forgot to simplify her answer, the second was from not seeing (x-4) vs (4-x) in the denominators, and the third was blank for some reason, but she knew how to do it. We did a mini-review of multiplying to get rid of fractions and she did the first half of that homework set. I wrote down step-by-step instructions for that type of problem, so she can feel more confident for the quiz. Then we started discussing probability and the multiplication principle. She had very little trouble with the homework, so I'm hoping this section will be easier for her.

We worked on two of the student's worksheets. The first was simplifying radicals. We started by reviewing basic principles and rules for simplifying radicals. The second part of the worksheet was multiplying radicals. We also reviewed the basic rules and principles first and then worked through the problems. The last worksheet involved adding and subtracting radicals along with solving for an unknown variable with a radical involved.

Algebra Tutoring review by Leland in South Jordan, UT
We went over division with polynomial functions. When we broke down problems into steps, the student was able to handle them after I showed her step by step how to approach a problem. She started to feel better with this as the session concluded.
