Elementary Math Tutoring review by Luke in St. John, IN
Today we went over the student's group test. The first error was on the opening problem. I showed her how I would walk through the problem by drawing the graph as I read its instructions, and I had her find the maximum and the necessary adjustment. She also missed 1 point on a problem that told her to translate a number line of roots and inequalities into a polynomial graph. She did, however, do the most of the problem correctly. I introduced her to the concept of synthetic division as well. I decided the best thing to do was introduce her to basic derivatives from calculus, as the most efficient means of determining turning points is to find the zeroes of the first derivative of a function. She seemed to understand. We reviewed the proper means of multiplying complex factors together and way that the complex portions cancel out to generate a quadratic with rational coefficients. Then we reviewed transforming it into vertex form. She forgot the name of vertex form, but she remembered how to get there once I reminded her what it meant. We practiced a couple vertex form problems to help reinforce her memory of the process, and especially of completing the square (which, as mentioned before, is a necessary step toward vertex form). Finally we reviewed sine and cosine graphs just to make sure she was extra clear about their behavior. In general, she understands them much more fluently than she did a couple weeks ago.

We reviewed the student's homework. It was about rational functions and how to simplify, multiply, divide, add, and subtract them. I explained to her the concept and asked her to solve them by herself to make sure she understands how to solve them. She is doing well.
