Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Jessie in St. John, IN
The student told me he thinks he did much better on his retake of the test. He will get his final results the last week of school. He informed me that his last week of school and final exams are the first week of June. We spent the majority of the session reading, analyzing and discussing To Kill a Mockingbird. We reviewed chapters 15 and 16 to make sure he is following along. I then pulled up a website that makes literature charts. He found the site very useful. The website color coordinates the different themes of the text within chapter summaries. The summaries on the site were detailed yet concise, so he was able to see what kind of summaries I am looking for each week. The summaries also emphasized theme by analyzing how each plot event is representative of a theme from the novel. He loved the chart and how the themes were color coordinated. It really helped him to see the summary and analysis of chapter 15 and 16 presented in such a way. For next week, he is to read chapters 17 and 18, and I told him I would like to see one paragraph of summary and one paragraph of analysis. I clarified that one paragraph needs to be at least 5 sentences long. I also asked him to please bring his History and English binder home, so we can start getting him organized for his final exams. I will also take a look at his recent vocabulary quizzes. He is to find out if his exams are cumulative and acquire a study guide from each of his teachers before our next session.

Phonics Tutoring review by Penni in St. John, IN
During this session the student and I discussed his assigned reading in The Outsiders. He had read all but the last two chapters, so we were able to discuss the themes that had arisen in the book and talked about what might happen at the end of the book. He said that in the rest of his classes they are reviewing in class with no work coming home to be completed.

Phonics Tutoring review by Nicholas in St. John, IN
We started our session with a short reading exercise. I had the student read the paragraph, summarize the main point, and provide at least two supporting details. We continued our lesson by reading two longer story excerpts. I asked questions along the way just to make sure he was comprehending what he was reading. We answered eight questions following the passages, which ranged from multiple choice to short answer responses. The student is an excellent reader but he has trouble picking out the little details that can tell you a lot about a story. He often does not refer back to the story for details if he needs it, which is something we are working on during our sessions.
