Our last session covered Sections 1.9 - 1.11 - Mixture Problems, Electronic Circuits, and Including Air Resistance. The common theme among all of the equations is they eventually become first order, nonhomogeneous, constant coefficient equations by way of making certain assumptions about each system. They can all be solved using the method of undetermined coefficients which we went over in detail at the beginning of the session. While we covered mixture problems last session, I felt it was important to reiterate the distinction between fixed and variable volume systems. This is an important distinction because fixed volume problems can be integrated and solved, while variable volume problems currently cannot be solved (he will learn partial integration later in the semester). I had the student complete two mixture problems to focus recognizing a fixed vs. variable system, how to break up a variable system AND how to recognize what is known and unknown about the system. The latter point has been a common theme throughout our sessions; a problem will not always explicitly state an initial or final condition or if the system ever reaches steady state, but those pieces of information are necessary to either 1. determine the equation's constant, 2. determine if the system approaches an upper or lower limit, and 3. If it does approach a limit, determine whether it will remain at that value (steady state) or vacillate. We worked through 2 practice problems each for electronic circuits and air resistance. For our past three sessions, I have provided the student our lesson outlines as reference. I sent the last one over to his mother last night after adding a table of the substitution functions under the method of undetermined coefficients. I wish him the best of luck in his studies.

The student went over homework problems involving separation of variables techniques to solve linear first order DE's. Began the undetermined coefficients method and worked homework problems solving the Euler form differential equations with nonconstant coefficients. I believe she understood both methods well but needs more practice with undetermined coefficients.

Today, we went over an assignment which he needs to turn in tomorrow. It was good practice of some electrical terms (resonance, and inductance, voltage dropped on resistors, capacitors and inductors) as well as solving second order ODE's for both the homogeneous and particular solutions. At the end of the session, we checked for any other questions he might have, and he asked about dampening on springs.
